Grow: 9 Points in Choosing a Strain

March 24th, 2009 by Silvio

SDC10091

Choosing a strain to grow can be overwhelming considering the massive amount of good plants out there. In order to get the most out of your grow, you should ask yourself a few questions before ordering the first strain you come across.

1.) Are you going to grow INDOORS or OUTDOORS?
Before you decide to go shopping for seeds, you should make your mind up about this question. Indoor growing will give you more control over the environment. Outdoor grows always depend on the weather, but don’t require expensive equipment and don’t drive your electricity bill through the roof. There are pros and cons for each. Find out what suits you best.

2.) What are your targets?
Are you aiming for a short and compact growing plant with high yields (Indica), or do you prefer a Sativa strain (tall, high quality buds and lower yielding). Then, there’s of course plants that combine both varieties.

3.) After what kind of high are you?
There are two basic types to chose from: The Indica high, which will knock you off your feet, gets you couch locked and keeps you there for a while. Or the trippy, head-based cerebral high you get of a Sativa.

4.) How potent do you want it?
On first impulse, everybody would probably say: as potent as humanly possible. And right you are. But every strain has different effects, too. They range from mellow to happy over to paranoid and thought provoking. Investigate before you invest money.

5.) What’s your budget?
How much are you willing to spend on your babies? Prices vary from as little as $20 for 10 seeds to as much as $150 for 5.

6.) How important is yield to you?
Some strains will give you the most amazing buds, but only a small amount. Others are rewarding in yield and quality, but the seeds will cost you accordingly.

7.) Will smell and odor be a problem in your grow area?
Some strains smell a lot, some are almost not noticeable.

8.) Once you picked a strain, hit the internet and do some research.
Look for grow journals, pictures of your chosen strain. Read how others experienced the grow. How much yield did they get? What medium did they use? How much light, and what nutrition did they use.

9.) Read about seedbanks.
Find out where the freebies are. Most seedbanks will give you free stuff.

Medical Marijuana: White Widow

March 23rd, 2007 by Alex

White Widow

White Widow is one of the most famous cannabis strains in the modern era. I have only come across this strain twice and both times it has really done the job. This indica and sativa hybrid is a great all around bud that gets you lifted quickly and heavily.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Strain White Widow
Type Indica/Sativa hybrid
Pros Many large crystals
Cons Not more like it
Price $25/g, $70/8th
tFS Rating 9.0/10

The White Widow bud has a great coloring with long hairs covered in many large crystals. This all adds up to one potent strain and, obviously, sets the standard for all other ‘white’ marijuana strains.

The effects from this top-quality herb are extreme. The buzz is powerful and energetic, yet social, leaving you feeling somewhat energized. The taste is divine and very sweet. A must for anyone who thinks they are a true strain connoisseur!

Most people automatically assume that kush’s are the best strains around, but beware of the mighty White Widow. A mid-priced bud that is sure to hit the spot and then some.

Medical Marijuana: Mango

March 20th, 2007 by Tim

Mango

Most dispensaries tend to have high-profile buds like a trainwreck or kush variant alongside some very random strains. Today, its the lesser known strain that gets the spotlight and it goes by the simple-yet-descriptive name of Mango.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Strain Mango
Type Indica hybrid
Pros Large, thick buds
Cons Dull coloring
Price $20/g, $60/8th
tFS Rating 7.5/10

This fruit-flavored bud is a great indica strain that has everything you look for in good quality medical marijuana. It emits a sweet, citrus smell that becomes extremely intense once the dense buds are broken up. Combined with a fruit flavored blunt wrap, this herb is just the trick for an after dinner dessert.

As expected, the taste follows the constant theme of this mango bud. It’s extremely fruity and the smoke any hint of harshness or a nasty afterbite. The high hits the body quickly remaining for around 2 hours. On the positive side, the effects aren’t overpowering to the point where you can’t function after smoking.

This hybrid of indica’s is a great experience with its big rich colorful buds and is sure to make and keep you satisfied. Dispensaries always seem to have random strains, however, this one is a diamond in the rough.

Medical Marijuana: Misty Haze

Misty Haze

Misty Haze is a sativa strain that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg yet provides a nice, quick high. A great break from the low range buds ranging to the super intense buds.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Strain Misty Haze
Type Sativa Dominant
Pros Very underestimated
Cons Short lasting high
Price $20/g, $60/8th
tFS Rating 7.0/10

I saw this bud up on the board and thought to myself that I enjoy most Haze strains, so lets give this one a try. This light green bud has a subtle amount of crystals that are just enough to pack a quick, intense hit.

The high hits your face & head area hard and very quickly, lasting for about 30 to 40 minutes. After that, it mellows out to almost nothing within the next 20 minutes – some might call it a rollercoaster ride. Overall, this haze variant doesn’t have the longest lasting high but make sure not to underestimate it.

When you take everything into consideration, this strain is a very decent bud for the level of highness and the price tag attached to it. You probably won’t come across this variety too often, but if you do, make sure not to look away too quickly.

Medical Marijuana: Hawaiian Sativa

February 22nd, 2007 by Ryan

Hawaiian Sativa

Hawaiian Sativa is something that looks like it just unloaded off a plane from Hawaii. A nice, plump piece of the big island!

theFreshScent Product Recap
Strain Hawaiian Sativa
Type Sativa dominant
Pros Peaceful high
Cons High could be stronger
Price $20/g, $60/8th
tFS Rating 7.5/10

The very first thing I enjoyed about this bud was its sweet garden smell. The nuggets are dense and compact with long thick red hairs. However, the shade of the leaves are slightly darker without an abundant amount of crystals. It could use a lighter shade of green to its color. Other than that, it looks like this crop was just picked off the plant.

The high isn’t as long lasting as you would hope for, but it does give you a great peaceful feeling for about an hour. Sure does help after a long day of work. Overall, it doesn’t pack the biggest punch but it does what is needed for a nice, relaxing evening.

This is one of those random strains you come across once in awhile, not living in the Hawaiian islands, this is relatively an inexpensive buy. A good looking, great tasting, and nice smelling bud that could use a little more kick.

Medical Marijuana: Mr. Nice

February 16th, 2007 by Alex

Mr. Nice

Some of the pot we review here on tFS is about as good as it gets. Still, not everyone has the funds to be dropping $75 – $80 every single 1/8th, so we’re going to make sure to cover all spectrums of the medical strains available. Today, I’m reviewing a moderately priced batch of buds called Mr. Nice.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Strain Mr. Nice
Type Indica dominant
Pros Buzz-like body high
Cons Tough to break apart
Price $20/g, $65/8th
tFS Rating 8.0/10

The first thing you notice about this herb is how dense it is. If you pay attention to the photo, it’s obvious this is not a leafy strain, so small nugs will weigh more than expected. The bud itself is dark green with lots of low-lying hairs. There is a nice coating of crystals on the leaves, and combined with the ever-present hairs, they give the illusion of a light-beige coating.

Mr. Nice smells smells surprisingly good. It’s a bright, sweet aroma with some lemony undertones – think citrus. When smoked, this bud packs a serious body high. Not a pulsating body high, but one that feels like more of a warm buzz. The effects are felt in the chest & back area the most and stay potent for quite a long time. This bud is still extremely stoney well past the 1-hour mark.

It’s always nice to come across a strain that not only smokes well but doesn’t burn a fat whole in the wallet. I’d recommend this to budget and luxury smokers alike.

Medical Marijuana: Strawberry Skunk

Medical Marijuana: Strawberry Skunk

I came across a great little gem the other day and it goes by the name of Strawberry Skunk. This sativa provides a nice relaxing body high right from the start.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Strain Strawberry Skunk
Type Sativa
Pros Great body high
Cons Short lasting
Price $25/g, $70/8th
tFS Rating 7.0/10

The leaves are not that stinky but do have a heavy spread of crystals. The purple isn’t very distinct but there is a light green tint that looks nice and is evident in each bud. When the bud is broken up, there is a high-skunky smell that is overpowering.

This bud hits the body including arms, hands, legs, and feet perfectly. It is an intense high for about an hour, then easing into a nice feeling of relaxation. This plant is quality, but it could definitely last longer.

Strawberry is a true gem to come across and helps make the night a relaxing one. I am usually not a big fan of sativa’s, however, this bud is helping change that.

Medical Marijuana: Real Deal Bubba Kush

January 30th, 2007 by Alex

###

I have come across many strains of sativa kush in my day, however, the Real Deal Bubba Kush is by far one of the best I have ever seen. Looks like I’m lucky that my first review is of some.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Strain Real Deal Bubba Kush
Type Indica dominant
Pros Intense all-over high
Cons Not more like it
Price $30/g, $80/8th
tFS Rating 9.5/10

The leaves are extremely sticky with a large coating of crystals. Each bud contains a slight shade of purple and there is a very sweet, almost citrus smell that lets you know a great taste is on the way.

Putting a flame to this plant is a delight. The flavor is intense yet smooth and packs a lot of body in the aftertaste.

Effects from this kush start at the head and progressively move outwards until a nice, intense high is rocking throughout your entire body. Please do not operate heavy machinery. Sit back, kick it and enjoy the ride!

The high lasts a long time, well over 2 hours. This kush is really potent and one of the best I’ve ever come across. However, it can milk the cash cow very easily.

Overall, this strain has it all. If you are looking for an intense, long lasting high then this is your bud. The pictures don’t even do it justice!
