Penn & Teller Make Drug Hypocrisies Disappear

June 18th, 2009 by Russ

If you’ve never seen Showtime’s Bullshit! you might not be aware that Penn & Teller, one of Vegas’s most popular magic duos of all time are also a couple of outspoken libertarians (granted Penn does most of the talking). Their cable show, Bullshit!, is sort of a political comedian’s version of Mythbusters. In this particular episode (with the full-length version available here), P+T examine some of the myths spouted by the few remaining drug warriors.

Bob Weiner, featured in the clip, is still at his propagandizing ways on this very day. In a letter discussing a (presumably non-published) op-ed of his, Weiner again reiterates his belief that…

Legalization would be a catastrophe… We must… fight drugs like a cancer.

You can almost hear the desperation in his voice. Do you also get the sense that his entire life’s work (of drug demonization) is on the precipice of going up in smoke?

Weeds Season 5 Begins June 8th

June 1st, 2009 by Rick

The Showtime show, Weeds is back for it’s fifth season, starting Monday, June 8th @ 10pm PT/ET. The first episode is entitled, Wonderful Wonderful.

Judging from the trailer it looks like Nancy is not killed, despite her narcing on the organization she had entangled herself with. Andy, Doug, Silus and Shane seem to be bound for a wacky wilderness experience as they decide to grow pot at a National Park. Celia is kidnapped but nobody seems to want to pay a ransom — yet let alone acknowledge her existence.

Alanis Moressette is casted as Nancy’s Obstetrician — sure to bring some comedy relief to the serious situation that has seemingly spiraled out of control. One wonders whether Esteban’s concern for the baby is for his future legacy or if he truly cares for Nancy, even after her snitching.

A Brief History of Weed

May 26th, 2009 by Russ

If only more television promos were this instructional. This mini-eduction on the history of herb is brought to you by the Showtime series Weeds.

A beautifully animated piece, it takes the viewer through the last few millennia of human interaction with the cannabis plant. The soundtrack is a joint called ‘You Lit Up for Me’ by psychedelic/pop band Emeen Z.

For a more thorough run through of the history of weed prohibition (specifically in the United States), check out the Woody Harrelson narrated, full-length feature, Grass.

Showtime’s Weeds Season Five Airs this June

May 14th, 2009 by Rick

For all those fans of the show Weeds on Showtime, Mary Louise Parker may have a little bit of competition when Alanis Morissette joins the cast in the last seven episodes as an obstetrician. Especially when it’s rumored that she may do a nude scene, in her pursuit of Nancy’s (Mary Louise Parker) brother Andy (Justin Kirk).

The previous season four ended with Nancy, the drug dealing mom, announcing that she was pregnant. The presumed father is Esteben, (Damián Bechir) the Mayor of a Mexican town that also happened to run a criminal syndicate that Nancy was connected to and so happened to turn in to the DEA.

With revenge driven DEA agents coming down hard on her and her betrayal to Esteban looming in the air, the season opener is sure to finally satisfy the questions that are burning in the minds of the fans. The first episode of season five airs Monday, June 8th @ 10pm PT/ET.

Be a Part of Showtime’s Weeds

October 14th, 2008 by Tim

The show’s producers are auctioning a walk-on role in conjunction with Variety’s Power of Youth. Proceeds (85 cents to the dollar) of this event will go directly to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help fund their “no child ever is denied treatment” organization.

St. Jude is the only pediatric research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance and no child is every denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay. St. Jude also pays for lodging, food and travel for patients and a family member or legal guardian.

The Weed’s guest role auction is close to about $1,000 right now. Make a bid and we’ll see you on Season 5 of Weeds!
