Filipino Government Sees Rise in ‘Narco-terrorism’
December 4th, 2008 by Perry
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has taken control of illicit drug trade in the Philippines, according to Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) chair Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.
Sotto recently oversaw construction of a large drug rehabilitation center and program to help combat drug abuse on the island nation.
Sotto explained:
This is what we call narco-terrorism, where Moro rebels engage in illegal drug trade to fund their operations. This poses big danger especially to younger generations.
The operations, often hidden among cassava plantations, have become increasingly more difficult for local authorities to control as the group gains funding needed to carry on governmental attacks.
Narco-terrorism is nothing new. First coined in the early 1980s, prominent cocaine and heroin groups such as the Colombian-based FARC have been using the drug trade to finance attacks on Latin American countries.
Another funding tactic for violent groups such as these is kidnapping. Check out the movie Proof of Life if you want to see a (mainly) realistic portrayal of the link between violence and drugs in developing countries.
Warning: Don’t Bring Drugs to the Phillipines

Holy shit! They do not mess around in Manilla.
Richard M. Sy was sentenced to 12 to 16 years of prison after being found guilty for possessing less than two grams of marijuana.
Apparently Sy never saw Brokedown Palace, Return to Paradise or Never Say Regret. The moral in all of those movies is Asian countries, particularly Southeastern ones, do not fuck around when it comes to narcotics.
The judge handed down a 6 page decision, and now Richard gets plenty of time to reflect about what the hell he was doing in the Philippines in the first place.
Sorry man…
$1.9M Seizure in the Philippines
November 13th, 2006 by Alex
Here are some hot off the press images from the Philippines. More than 10,000 marijuana plants, valued at $1.9 million, were discovered and uprooted by the Philippine National Police. The crop was found in raids at the tri-boundaries of La Union, Ilocos Sur, and Bengued provinces.
Looks like some farmer is about to have a really crappy day.
More photos after the jump.
