Minnesota Takes Tiny Step Toward Medical Marijuana
May 26th, 2009 by Erin
Minnesota is in the initial stages of pursuing a medical marijuana law. The Minnesota House vote on the medical marijuana bill came 70-64, approving a measure to allow terminally ill patients to use cannabis to help treat their ailments.
The YES voters were 63 democrats and 7 republicans. The NO voters were 24 democrats and 40 republicans.
The version passed by the House is different than the one passed by the Senate and may not get to Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty’s desk in the remaining four session hours this year. Even so, since Pawlenty took office, the administration has been opposed to this legislation and he said he would veto any medical marijuana measure that doesn’t have the support of law enforcement.
The Other Big Three Push for Decriminalization

Citing the utter failure of any kind of war on drugs, several world leaders have urged President Obama to consider further reducing the penalty for marijuana use.
Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Ernesto Zedillo of Mexico, and Cesar Gaviria of Colombia, all made the same recommendation – coincidentally these men reside in three of the world’s four leading weed exporters.
It’s time to recognize the failure, the article states. And, if we’re doing it abroad, we might as well do it at home too.
Marijuana activists in Minnesota are leading a renewed push at legalization for MMJ. They are hoping a shift in strategy, emphasizing compassion, will garner enough votes that Gov. Pawlenty will think twice before blocking it, as he did with previous MMJ legislation.
Also on the legalization front, lawmakers in Seattle are considering again downgrading marijuana as a legal priority. Already not considered high on the list, no pun intended, a new piece of legislation will make it a $100 fine for being caught in possession.
Okay I guess if you’re used to being thrown in jail over it, a $100 ticket should be a Godsend, but I think we can do better Seattle. Why do we need to punish these people at all, they’re not hurting anyone?
Minnesota Police Sniff Out Some Pot

When an investigation led to the Herman sewer system for some Minn. deputies smelled something they weren’t quite expecting — marijuana.
Intending to cite a faulty sewer line, the detectives ended up obtaining a warrant and arresting a suspect for a large, indoor growing operation. A 21-year-old suspect was taken in after $10,000 worth of marijuana was found in the house where the odor/scent originated.
