Oregon is close to becoming the 6th U.S. state to legalize hemp. Last week the Oregon Senate voted 27-2 on Senate Bill 676, in favor of legalizing the plant cousin to cannabis. On Monday, the Oregon House of Representatives voted 46-11 on the bill.

Vote Hemp President Eric Steenstra said:

Hemp is a versatile, environmentally-friendly crop that has not been grown in the U.S. for over fifty years because of a misguided and politicized interpretation of the nation’s drug laws by the Drug Enforcement Administration. [...] While a new bill in Congress, HR 1866, is a welcome step, the hemp industry is hopeful that President Obama’s administration will recognize hemp’s myriad benefits to farmers, businesses and the environment.

Hemp has had a variety of uses, dating back 10,000 years ago. Such as:

Building material

Food

Nutrition

Dietary supplement

Medicine

Fiber

Water and soil purification

Weed control

Fuel

The states Maine, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota and Vermont all passed legislation this year for the farming of hemp. The United States currently continues to import hemp, while other countries cultivate the plant and export it. Obviously with so many uses for this plant, it threatens more industries now than what were around back in the days when Hearst and DuPont began their campaign to try to put the hemp plant on the endangered species list.

It seems like Whole Foods is really wrapping their arms around the hemp revolution.

They now carry the Nutiva Organic Hemp Shake, and in contrast with Whole Foods sometimes steep prices, you can snag this delicious shake at $0.99. It contains organic hemp protein, superfood chocolate blend (organic FairTrade Certified chocolate, organic ramon nuts, organic guar gum, inulin from chicory root, organic mesquite pods), organic Fair Trade Certified evaporated cane juice, and organic chocolate flavor.

If you’re looking for a good dose of fiber to stay regular, you need to pick some of this up. Ellen over at IAteAPie.net recommends it. Mix 2-4 tablespoons of HempShake™ with milk (or ideally, soy milk, hemp milk, rice milk or almond milk), and throw in some banana (optional) and blend to make it rich and frothy. Each serving provides 12 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein.

If you don’t know me by now, I love anything organic and hemp is definitely a staple in my diet. I’ve been looking for a healthy morning beverage mix and since Carnation just isn’t cutting it, I think I know what my new go-to mix is.

Here’s a recipe courtesy of NutivaHempShake.com:

Chocolate Dream
2-4 Tbsp. Nutiva® Hempseed
2-4 Tbsp. Nutiva® HempShake™
8 oz. vanilla rice milk
1-2 Tbsp. Nutiva® Coconut Oil
1 ripe or frozen banana

Place seeds in a blender with 1 oz. of water, blend into a thick paste, and add remaining ingredients.

Done.

In an effort for the UK government to “build more housing with a smaller carbon footprint,” a three-bedroom prototype dubbed a “renewable house” has been designed thanks to a grant for €200,000 from the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in Britain.

The National Non-Food Crops Centre (NNFCC), who built the home, say that the walls are made from Hempcrete — a mixture of hemp and lime and that home owners will see a reduction of their energy bills to a cost of about €150 annually.

Dr John Williams, head of materials at the NNFCC said:

The forecasts are that we could roll this out very quickly if someone places an order for 25,000 homes. [...] Increasing numbers of farmers are growing hemp because it fits in with their current growing cycles between April and September and it is a good break crop for wheat. [...] If just 1 per cent of the UK’s agricultural land was used to grow hemp, it would be enough to build 180,000 homes per year.

The new hemp house would offer a cheaper and greener solution to the homes built with the usual brick and mortar — projected to cost around €75,000, excluding outside work to the grounds. The NNFCC also figures that 110kg (242.5lb) of carbon dioxide would be absorbed from the atmosphere due to the hemp crops being grown.

Hemp is what America was founded on.

And in these dire times for farmers and the rest of the American population suffering through economic hardship, it is about time we produce what we are arguably best at — behold, great American theater.

The Caitlin County Hemp Wars is a story about a three-generation family that grows industrial hemp in a desperate effort to save their farm. Think Oklahoma! meets Fiddler on the Roof in this “roots” driven musical about community and family that drives home a very important point. The tide is turning; the collective conscious of America is quickly coming to a consensus that old, ridiculous, harmful legal restrictions on non-psychoactive hemp is no small matter.

Playwrights Terry Crystal and Don DiVecchio probably didn’t have to look hard for inspiration, but the production is the result of five-years-in-the-making effort culminating in what may be the next great piece of Americana.

The Caitlin County Hemp Wars will premiere Tuesday, May 5th at 7:30pm @ the Zero Arrow Theatre in Harvard Square.

In the United Kingdom, researchers are at work building a new breed of environmentally friendly structures. An association of construction companies and researchers have dedicated over a million bucks on learning how to make houses with hemp-lime.

Hemp-lime is a concrete block made with lime and hemp shives. It’s appealing to builders for many reasons; it’s lightweight, consumes carbon while it grows, while lime leaves a very low “carbon footprint.” In fact, some say that it leaves “a better than zero carbon footprint.”

Professor Pete Walker Director of the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials, is spearheading the research.

Walker said:

Using renewable crops to make building materials makes real sense – it only takes an area the size of a rugby pitch four months to grow enough hemp to build a typical three bedroom house.

Hemp-lime housing seems very promising. Will we see hemp-lime houses in the U.S? Not any time soon, I’m afraid. Even though California is the metaphorical marijuana Garden of Eden, the Governator vetoed “The California Industrial Hemp Farming Act” citing a conflict between Federal and State law.

In 2006 Americans spent an estimated $270 million dollars on hemp products imported from other countries. For some reason, American law enforcement officers oppose legally farming the virtually THC-free plant.

It is suiting that a man you probably never heard of is the same guy who envisioned cannabis hemp saving the world from the problem of limited resources in 1974! You may have seen clips, read articles, or learned the theories this man was responsible for legitimatizing, but with time comes the amazing ability for some people’s achievements to get lost in the shuffle.

The Emperor of Hemp: The Jack Herer Story (1999) is the documentary that includes segments that will make you go, “Ahhh, dude, I remember seeing that on YouTube a few years ago.” While Obama would rather you just chuckle when he cracks jokes (i.e. like the way he calls welfare expansion a “tax cut”), this movie is no joke.

Jack Herer is the author of a 1985 best-selling book titled The Emperor Wears No Clothes. 30 years ago his life became a crusade against tyranny and the social acceptance of falsehoods, and he has, against the will of the mainstream media, produced new information on an ancient plant the world shunned in favor of fossil fuels, deforestation and destruction.

The first book Herer wrote was an animated book called Grass, and soon thereafter put together the deep-seeded connection mankind had with hemp and what followed was firestorm that opened the way for Jack to be the figurehead for a bandwagon few at the time were ready to jump on.

Shunned by zero tolerance laws that were highlighted by Ronald Reagan’s claim marijuana resulted in permanent brain damage in 1980, Jack would eventually get arrested, which would lead to his masterpiece, The Emperor Wears No Clothes, in 1983, best described as “a part scientific document, part journalistic exposé and part holy crusade” must-read, currently in its 11th edition.

Check out the Hemp for Victory story at a little after the 35-minute mark, which is an especially rewarding byproduct of this documentary. If you find yourself asking what difference a film of this nature makes, your answer is provided.

The farming of industrial hemp may be returning to the United States, thanks to the effort of two Washington lawmakers, Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Ron Paul (R-Texas), who are reintroducing legislation to legalize the black sheep family member of Cannabis. Many hemp advocates believe legalizing it will stimulate our current sinking economy.

Eric Steenstra, president of Vermont-based Vote Hemp, said in a statement:

Hemp is a versatile, environmentally-friendly crop that has not been grown here for over 50 years because of a politicized interpretation of the nation’s drug laws by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Jobs would be created overnight, as there are numerous U.S. companies that now have no choice but to import hemp materials valued at $360 million in annual retail sales and growing.

$360 million a year is a drop in the bucket compared to what hemp can truly net. Hemp has numerous uses including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food, and fuel. The Chinese have been using it for over a millennia, finding over 5,000 uses for it. Henry Ford grew industrial hemp on his estate after 1937. He made plastic cars with wheat straw, hemp and sisal… but Rockefeller bought and destroyed them. Soon thereafter, hemp was banned.

Major producers include Canada, France, and China but nearly every industrialized country in the world produces hemp. More hemp is exported to the United States than to any other country.

One unusual, and pretty damn cool, transformation of the Wiimote has been done by the enigmatic modder DHRECK.

The remote is made from 3 different kinds of 100% natural hemp string. Functionally, it is completely intact, with all accelerometers, infrared cameras, and buttons working in perfect order.

This is no cookie-cutter mod, DHRECK didn’t want a stocky, unwieldy remote, so he had to whittle down the main body of each controller by a significant amount. He used saws and files to get the shape required, then re-built the body of each piece with modeling putty. After sanding and some quick painting, that served as the base for his creation.

DHRECK’s overall goal was to turn something stark, bland and boring into a device that was more natural, warm and textured. He’s definitely succeeded, even if the remote itself can degrade quickly due to the fragile nature of how it is wrapped (and the way people use Wiimote’s in the first place).

Tons of extra shots after the jump…

For those of you that equate hemp and its by-products to novelty goods for impractical tree-huggers, think again.

This video is an eye-opening look at the myriad uses for hemp, from healthy hemp bread to even luxury car doors. An interview with Roger Johnson, who is an agricultural commissioner from North Dakota, talks about great potential for a hemp market in the United States.

Johnson cites the fact that over 30 countries currently cultivate hemp, most of which do so to sell their products within the United States.

“What an opportunity we’re giving away, throwing away, by not being a part of this industry,” Johnson said.

Johnson goes on to list a plethora of products that come from hemp production; such as paper, clothing, rope and uses for hemp oil, like high-end cosmetics.

With all of these uses available, it’s a shame that Arnold vetoed a bill for industrial hemp last year, and we continue to lose out on another economy-strengthening product.

Pamela Anderson recently decided to get involved in yet another cause, pro-marijuana activism.

Well known for her love of animals and charitable donations, Anderson recently wrote a letter to Barack Obama and blogged about the importance of legalization. She outlines how cultivating marijuana would “save children” and help the environment.

I think we should legalise marijuana, tax and monitor farm hemp etc. This would make our borders less corrupt and then I think eventually this will be more secure option and save children in the long run – we should be able to farm hemp in America – it’s just silly. It would create jobs and be good for the environment.

Here, here.

She also goes on to show a little more radical side. Pamela also controversially suggests anyone found guilty of molesting children or possessing child pornography, should be castrated for their crimes.

Can’t deny it’d cut down on repeat offenders though. Heyoooooo! I’m sorry.
