More bad news for the land down under in form of tainted ecstasy. The Crime and Misconduct Commission in Australia is planning on releasing a report saying that ecstasy cooks are spiking their drugs with:

Anti depressants

Methamphetamine

Ketamine

CMC intelligence director Chris Keen said:

Whereas previously a tablet may have mainly contained ecstasy as the active drug there is now an increased incidence of tablets containing other types of drugs within one tablet. [...] A person who believes they have overdosed from ecstasy may be shown from a toxicology perspective to be from anti-depressive drugs because that was major content of the tablet. [...] To meet the high market demand tablets are being sold as ecstasy that contain no ecstasy at all. [...] Another result of lower purity tablets is that consumers are on average swallowing more tablets in a session (from one to two) than they were five to six years ago, possibly this is to seek achieving the same high. [...] This type of behaviour creates a greater risk for adverse reactions and overdoses.

According to a report by the Australian Crime Commission, Australia has the highest use of ecstasy per capita in the world.

Back in the day the only thing that looked like a Flintstone vitamin was a Flintstone vitamin. Nowadays the illegal drug traffickers and manufacturers within Missouri have come up with some ecstasy tabs that take the shape and appearance of certain cartoon characters like Snoopy, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and even one non-cartoon character in the form of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Authorities are concerned about children mistaking the drugs for candy or vitamins. The drugs are currently in Kansas City and reportedly on their way to St. Louis.

Master of Irony, Craig Farris, was arrested last Thursday afternoon when he attempted to sell meth and ecstasy to an undercover police officer. Farris, founder and CEO of the Over the Wall Foundation, made his initial fortune helping young people face and recover from addiction. Apparently he’s making a second fortune by re-establishing himself as their primary drug dealer in their Foundation Sponsored Relapse.

In an interesting twist, the drugs intercepted by police turned out not to be illicit drugs at all. Sly Craig Farris not only has got the best racket in town (dealing drugs to addicts inside their own treatment center), he’s pawning off Tylenol and oregano to do it. At least he’s consistent: he lacks scruples as a drug counselor and a drug dealer at the same time.

They also found actual use of marijuana by way of a pipe, blunts and stems in the living room, along with 12 Ecstasy pills found on a nightstand in his bedroom.

Let’s just hope he hadn’t popped a pill or two right before his trip to the county jail or it would might make for an odd night in lock-up.

Tuesday’s New York Daily News featured a story about an artsy fellow entrapped by police in a sting operation for selling weed, ecstasy and LSD. The obviously non-violent William Delp described himself as an filmmaker, composer, and social activist. His part time work at a Columbia University art studio apparently earned the headline in the paper.

While Delp is chalked up as another non-violent victim of the War on Drugs, a far more interesting development was the comment stream on the Daily News’s website.

User hjo4 noted:

I don’t know what world you live in but a drug dealer does more harm to society at large than a sick demented person who roasts a kitten. Both acts are despicable but drug abuse cost us ALL.

Thank you, hj04. If only we pursued serial kitten-roasters with the same fervor as casual psychedelic users in this country — we might one day eliminate the scourge of charred kittens altogether.

In response to a Delp neighbor comment that he was seen often flashing the peace sign, internet humanitarian, ThisisJoeGaggs noted:

Anyone who is constantley using the peace sign is a coward, only a coward will seek peace on a constant basis. When I want to use a greeting I use the WAR sign, which is done by holding up the first three fingers to form a W. Columbia is filled with a bunch of dis-illusioned future cowards who don’t have the brains or balls to understand that in order to achieve peace one must destroy his enemies.

There you have it folks. The voice of the War on Drugs. Murdering, raping, and turning cities into rubble is fine and dandy as long as it is done to enemy peoples (and preferably in countries that most Americans can’t visualize on a map.) Expanding your mind with plant cultivation, on the other hand, is the refuge of cowards and kitten roasters. Well said.

Although I’d never heard of Dr. Alexander Shulgin until now, I really wish I had. We can thank Shulgin for creating over 200 psychedelic compounds, a pair of memoir/cookbooks called PHiKAL and TiHKAL (Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved, and Tryptamines I Have Known and Loved), and for reintroducing us all to ecstasy in 1976; a drug that had been considered useless when it was patented in 1914.

So how many times has Shulgin been arrested? Surprisingly, never. The compounds were not illegal when he created them — the DEA hadn’t heard of them yet. From the 50s through the 80s, he actually had the DEA’s full support and a DEA-issued Schedule I research license until PHiKAL was published in 1993. They weren’t too stoked on that; his lab was raided and his license revoked.

An experience with mescaline in 1960 attributed to his unconventional field of research.

He described that everything he saw and thought:

Had been brought about by a fraction of a gram of a white solid, but that in no way whatsoever could it be argued that these memories had been contained within the white solid… I understood that our entire universe is contained in the mind and the spirit. We may choose not to find access to it, we may even deny its existence, but it is indeed there inside us, and there are chemicals that can catalyze its availability.

Dr. Shulgin still views himself as a scientist; just maybe a little more exploratory and unafraid to test on himself. He prides himself on the identification and classification of a slew of psychedelic compounds previously unbeknownst to mankind.

In the past few weeks, during Operation Metropermata 2009, police in Jakarta, Indonesia and several other regions, have seized a little over $14 billion dollars worth of drugs and raw materials used in making the drugs – including ammonia, methanol acetone and ephedrine, a key ingredient within crystal methamphetamine.

Police conducted a tour on Friday of a Depok Factory that had been raided, which alone had over 9.8 tons of raw material, enough to make 5 kilograms of Ecstasy and 15 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine per day. Apparently, if all the raw material from that factory had been used, 11.5 million Ecstasy pills and hundreds of kilograms of high-grade crystal methamphetamine would have been able to have been made.

National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said:

That’s enough to drug the whole population of Jakarta.

Via wikipedia:

population of 8,489,910

Damn. An increase of the amount of drugs discovered in Indonesia has risen since 2006 when only 466,000 recovered was reported. Last year, the Ministry’s report claims that 1,291,000 were recovered. Police are worried that Indonesia is not just a haven for drug dealers but now also a mass production site. Police claim that the drug ring in Indonesia began in January and allegedly had ties to Thailand and Hong Kong.

Fifteen suspects have been arrested, who had acted as distributors, suppliers and workers. Three suspects fled the country and are currently being sought after on an international scale.

It’s an interesting trend in British Columbia, as marijuana use for teens there has dropped for the tenth straight year but prescription drugs without a doctor’s consent, as well as hallucinogen drugs such as Ecstasy, are on the rise. Ecstasy use alone had increased by nine percent since 2003.

Unfortunately, the survey doesn’t explain why their teens have moved to pills.

The Toronto Star reports Canada needs to do slightly more to curb drug trafficking, as it has become the No. 1 source of ecstasy in the United States.

The 2009 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, released Friday, highlights the growth of methamphetamine “superlabs” throughout the country, particularly in British Columbia and Ontario.

Most of the bloggers who commented, (Canucks to be specific,) brought up a pretty good point: Canada should probably start worrying about the flow of drugs down south as soon as we start worrying about the flow of guns up north.

Although the United States isn’t the only country caught in this web of deception by our seemingly polite neighbors to the north, the report cites Canadian data indicating Canadian-produced meth has turned up around the world, including Australia, Japan and New Zealand.

How about what’s the deal with Canadian bacon, too? It’s not Canadian or bacon, those cheeky bastards.

After years of apocryphal horror stories, a recent large-scale study showed long-term, the effects of MDMA aren’t really that bad for you.

The UK Advisory Panel on the Misuse of Drugs found the results showed that mild memory loss is a common occurrence but the most harmful effect seems to be how someone’s system will react to the drug, with some cases even a small MDMA dosage leading to death from exhaustion or poisoning.

The study argues this is an extremely small minority, as millions of people take the drug every year in the UK and there were 30 deaths linked to the drug last year. The review also called for a rescheduling of the drug by class into a lesser category with cannabis.

Wrapping up a series of raids Tuesday, police seized over more than 100 pounds (45 kg) of ecstacy with a street value of over $2 million. The amount of powder found in the series of labs around Northern California is thought to be enough to make 88,000 ecstasy pills.

The raids were part of a sting investigation that netted nine arrests aimed at shutting down a drug ring called “dangerous” by Attorney General Jerry Brown.

The seizures also included 23 pounds of psychedelic mushrooms and more than half a million dollars in cash, which was found in a different home. 30 pounds of marijuana said to be valued around $50,000, and what is thought to be LSD powder, was found in yet another house. The sting operation began on an anonymous tip to police about a potential drug lab, which then led to the surveillance that uncovered the drug coop.

The San Jose Mercury News also reported agents seized a .45-caliber handgun, thousands of dollars worth of chemicals, commercial-grade laboratory glassware and more than 100 gallons of toxic, poisonous and flammable liquids and solids. Hazardous chemicals and laboratory equipment filled 40 large barrels.

Two men who are thought to be the owners of the house — which had basically been turned into a drug lab to process MDMA — are wanted for questioning in connection with the seizure.

Ahead of a UK government meeting on the misuse of drugs, the UK Drugs Policy Commission has submitted a report to <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/lawandorder/3062054/Drugs-classification-should-be-scrapped-experts-say.html"downgrade the drug classification of ecstasy. UK uses an ‘A, B and C’ scale to dictate the danger of drugs and the correlating penalties for being caught with them.

The commission is suggesting that the over-politicization of drug classifications is harming the system, and the entire scale needs to be re-thought. Basically, rating things on a “danger scale” has no effect on any users, and a more intelligent system that alerts people of physical & mental dangers would be much more effective.

Roger Howard, Chief Executive, UK Drug Policy Commission, had this to say:

The time has come for an independent wholesale review of the system to clarify how a scientific rating of drug harms should be used for drug classifications and for wider applications such as setting policing priorities or public health messages.

Exciting? No. A possible step in the right direction (for Europeans)? Yes.
