CNBC is coming out with a marijuana documentary called ‘Marijuana Inc: Inside America’s Pot Industry‘. As the name suggests, the story focuses on the monetary gains of the pot cultivation and distribution industry in California.

It covers the usual range of subjects:

  • Cultivation and suburban/rural grow oeprations
  • Dispensaries and the questionable legality they rely on
  • Increased crime rate in Mendocino county and other grower-heavy areas
  • State & federal level arrests and prosecutions

It should be interesting to see a corporate-produced documentary on the marijuana industry and its effect on the American community, as compared to the multiple independent efforts that have been released over the past year. What do you think, will the overall tone be negative or positive?

We’ll be watching, if you want to see Marijuana Inc., check your local listings for the correct channel, the documentary premieres on Thursday, January 22nd at 9pm & 1am EST.

Colorado Battles Meth With Television Program

January 9th, 2009 by Perry

Crystal Darkness

In an effort to raise awareness of the drug’s dangers, all Colorado television stations will be airing “Childhelp Crystal Darkness,” an hour-long documentary about methamphetamine abuse.

Jeannine Truswell, United Way of Weld County’s executive director, said:

The hope is that many of these will be families and individuals seeking help with meth addiction. This is a night for families to block out everything else and watch this together. We believe it will make a difference in many, many lives. Meth is so destructive to our children, our families and our community. We have to come together to take a stand against this terrible drug.

The program and its showing are the results of a grassroots campaign started by the United Way. “Childhelp Crystal Darkness” will feature testimonials by recovering addicts from all over the state.

High: The True Tale of American Marijuana

November 18th, 2008 by Perry

November 18th is the DVD release date for High: The True Tale of American Marijuana.

I know you’re probably thinking, “ugh, another marijuana documentary,” but don’t be so quick to judge, you might enjoy the film.

Yes it’s propaganda, but there seems to be a little more validity for pro-marijuana material because its aimed at the spread of information and tolerance, not disinformation and persecution.

This particular story has some interesting first and second-hand accounts of people caught up in the drug war, or who had their lives ruined by it. I’m sure there’s some footage in this film you haven’t seen in a dozen other weed documentaries. Sometimes it’s important to put faces and emotions next to the issue, instead of just numbers and history lessons.

Check out a quick trailer above or go to High’s website for more information (and a pretty cool blog).

The Union: Award Winning Documentary

October 30th, 2008 by Alex

Here’s a riveting trailer for a documentary called The Union: The Business Behind Getting High.

Directed by Brett Harvey, this movie has won multiple film festival awards in Canada, and has some pretty biting insight into the industry behind keeping marijuana illegal. Pharmaceutical companies, private prisons, the government, and other entities all profit from the persecution of one of the world’s most useful plants.

Other than the impressive content, check out just a few of the heavy hitters interviewed for this documentary:

  • Tommy Chong – you know who he is
  • Joe Rogan – one of the coolest dudes alive
  • Marc Emery – the Prince of Pot
  • Steve Bloom – our friend at CelebStoner
  • Ed Rosenthal – the grow expert
  • Craig X – well known marijuana activist
  • And over 20 more

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to see The Union yet, but I’m going to get in contact with the production crew and request a copy. I’m really looking forward to checking it out.

Support The Union at their CafePress store or check out some of their press & awards.

“Hemp for Victory” WWII Era Hemp Production

February 26th, 2007 by Alex

Here is an 11-minute documentary on World War II era hemp production. This video shows the amazing disparity between the government’s current-day stance compared to earlier in the 20th century.

This video covers the growing, harvesting, production and many uses of commercial grade hemp. Unforunately, this extremely useful plant has been regulated by the government almost as strictly as marijuana, just because of its similarities.

Still, as with the medical marijuana movement, there is a groundswell of support that is slowly bringing the issue of wide-range commercial hemp production to the political spotlight.

Grass – History of the War on Marijuana

December 7th, 2006 by Alex

Here is a widely praised, full-length documentary on the history of marijuana prohibition.

Narrated by Woody Harrelson and directed by Ron Mann, this video takes an in-depth look into the amazinly political motivations that led to our current day marijuana laws. It also examines the non-stop propaganda campaign that allowed all these laws to be approved in the first place.

Although a lot of humor is used, if you think about it, this is a pretty sobering notice that even the smartest people can be tricked by an intelligently run propaganda campaign.

If you want to watch the whole movie but don’t like the small screen, check out the hi-res version.
