Cheech & Chong Reminisce About Getting Busted

June 26th, 2009 by Russ

Here’s a cute video of the legendary comic pair retelling a story of getting busted after a performance at the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, FL. Amazingly enough, the cops didn’t even attempt to pin a drug charge on the celebrity stoners. Instead, they were arrested on an obscenity charge, which was later dropped.

The Tampa police seem to be a bit sensitive about language, as they arrested Janice Joplin in 1969 while playing in the very same venue. For comics, however, being arrested for obscenity is a rite of passage. Comedy legends Lenny Bruce and George Carlin have both been taken into the clink for saying naughty things, but neither of those charges managed to stick either.

The only major charge that caught up to the Up in Smoke duo hit Tommy Chong in 2003. Already well past his comedy prime, Chong was involved in a glass bong-selling business with his son, Paris. District Attorney and Bush appointee, Mary Beth Buchanon secured Chong’s conviction on a drug paraphernalia charge (as part of a $12 million debacle called Operation Pipe Dream), for which he actually had to serve nine months in prison. This is why he refers to himself as a ‘felon’ near the end of the piece.

Unlike many other entertainers, Cheech and the Chonger actually practice what they preach. And that’s one big reason why they’re still so popular after nearly 40 years.

The Dude, Spicoli and Other Classic Movie Stoners

December 11th, 2008 by Perry

In honor of James Franco’s humbling, bumbling and stumbling stoner portrayal of Saul Silver in Pineapple Express, Unreality Magazine put together a pretty solid list of memorable stoner characters in movies.

Ranging from the lesser known Floyd in True Romance (not a huge part of the movie but a fantastically realistic stoner portrayal by Brad Pitt), to Cheech and Chong, David Chappelle as Half Baked’s protagonist, Thurgood — all with some great clips.

The worst portrayal has to go to Dante in Grandma’s Boy — what kind of drug dealer would buy a lion to protect his or her stash?

Prominent activist, and all around cool guy, Howard Dover has organized another comedy show to benefit the medical marijuana community.

Hosted at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, Howard always brings together some top talent to help his main cause. Russell Peters is the host and plenty of other performers will show up. You might even get to talk to Jack Herer.

If you’re in the area (and aren’t opposed to laughing), go see the show and tell us how it went.

Oh yea, check out some of the good times at one of Howard’s recent shows.

Courting Condi

November 7th, 2008 by Alex

With a President-elect sitting in the wings, a new administration is waiting to take over the White House. We’ve all been focusing on Obama & McCain these past few months, but what about Bush? And more importantly, what about that strikingly beautiful Secretary of State with the beguiling smile?

These are questions I don’t have the courage to answer, but a man by the name of Devin Ratray does, and he filmed the epic journey that ensued.

In a self-billed romantic/political/biographic documentary, Devin asks one simple question:

Can one man with a dream win the heart of the world’s most powerful woman?

I have no idea, but Courting Condi should be fun to watch…

Just a quick reminder that the king of spreading hilarious misery, Larry David, is in production for Season 7 of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

The show is slated to launch in early 2009, but if you haven’t been keeping track of Leon, Cheryl, Jeff or the rest of the gang, you can re-watch Season 6.

Take a look at HBO’s schedule to catch some repeats.

Here’s one of my favorite scenes:

GreenTherapy.com Presents ExtravaGANJA

January 25th, 2007 by Alex

###

There are many things that create a perfect match for each other – peanut butter & jelly, rum & coke and (my personal favorite) marijuana & laughter. Knowing this full well, Green Therapy is hosting another ExtravaGANJA in Hollywood, CA.

Green Therapy’s goal is to “raise awareness of the benefits of medical marijuana and to help bring patients some relief by giving them a laugh or two”. That sounds like a damn honorable mission statement to me.

Performing comics include Joe Rogan, Jeff Ross, Doug Benson, Dom Irrera, Todd Glass and more. There’s also going to be an afterparty featuring Los Marijuanos and the DVD release of ‘Get Pony Boy’. Overall, it’s going to be one entertaining night.

Tickets cost $20 at the door with a $5 discount to medical marijuana patients. The event is being held in The Comedy Store, located at 8433 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood.

Doug Benson is one of my favorite comics, so I’m definitely dropping by this show. If you support medical marijuana then come on down and have a great night.

Colbert Talks with Drug Policy Alliance Head

January 10th, 2007 by Alex

Why not start the morning off with something funny? Here’s Stephen Colbert and Ethan Nadelmann having a “debate” about the War on Drugs.

Who exactly is Nathan Nadelmann? He’s the Executive Director of the Drug Policy Alliance.

Stephen is a master of turning an interview into an improv comedy fest, but you can tell Nathan really tries to get some solid numbers out there for the public to digest.

He also does a good job talking about incarceration, legalization and the right to alter one’s own body – all while keeping Stephen on his toes. Even the audience responded well.

Matching wits with the Soaring Eagle himself has to be daunting as hell, but I think it went over damn well.

Read on to see Part 2 of the Colbert/Nadelmann interview.
