Cyclones: Honey

January 22nd, 2007 by Alex

###

It’s Monday morning, so let’s start this week the right way with a blunt wrap review. I didn’t want to kick us off with a normal-style blunt, but instead something a little different – Cyclones.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Category Blunts
Company Zensmoke
Made In Philippines
Pros Pre-rolled
Cons No flavor, bad taste
Price $1.00
tFS Rating 3.0/10

Cyclones are cone shaped, pre-rolled blunt wraps. They’re protected by a patent pending design that allows for a quick fill and easy smoke. Today’s review flavor is Honey but ZenSmoke also makes Peach, Sour Apple, Fruit Punch, Strawberry-Kiwi, Blueberry, Natural, Mango and White Chocolate. Developing this many flavors shows a significant investment on the manufacturers part.

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s move on to the details. First, they are extremely convenient and easy to roll. As long as you have a grinder ready, these take less than 2 minutes to pack nicely and take out the door. Other than usability, the honey smell is relatively on point, but that’s where the good features end.

The most important aspect of these wraps is that they don’t taste like honey. They taste more synthetic than anything I’ve encountered in a long time. What’s worse is they eventually start tasting bad. Almost like there’s some sort of acidic film in your mouth and on your lips. This has to improve in future versions.

Cyclones wraps also add a level of harshness to your smoke. The treatment and texture of the leaf itself is considerably different than that of Juicy Jay’s, Blunt Wrap or Da Bomb Blunts. This is due to the fact the leaves need to be hardened and dried so they maintain their cone shape.

There are going to be some people out there who don’t agree with this, but Cyclones Honey are one of the worst blunts we’ve tested so far. Being convenient is a positive, but not at the price it costs. I hope other flavors bring more to the table for the next pre-rolled blunt review.

Blunt Wrap: Gin & Juice

December 21st, 2006 by Alex

Blunt Wraps: Gin and Juice

For some reason, alcohol-flavored blunts seem to be popular with manufacturers these days. Blunt Wrap has thrown their own version into the mix with their Platinum Gin & Juice flavored wrap.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Category Blunts
Company Blunt Wrap
Made In Domincan Republic
Pros Good packaging
Cons Low on flavor
Price $1.50
tFS Rating 6.0/10

Made in the cigar-rolling region of the Dominican Republic, Blunt Wrap materials are always quality. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily flow over to the taste and/or smell. BW’s ‘hot-foil’ sealing technique made the blunt perfectly moist and and the serrated edges are easy to roll with. The original leaf smell is almost impossible to pinpoint. I can tell you it doesn’t smell like Gin, Juice or Gin & Juice.

The wrap smokes fine. No surprises really – it burned evenly and the smoke wasn’t harsh. The blunt didn’t give off any distinct taste or aromas while burning. Overall, this one falls short. Gin & Juice is a tough flavor to replicate and the technique definitely hasn’t been mastered yet.

Juicy Blunts: Pear

Juicy Blunts: Pear

Earlier this week, tFS handed out a 6.5/10 blunt rating – our lowest yet. Well, that record isn’t going to stand for long because a new crown holder has shown up.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Category Blunts
Company ZenSmoke
Made In Dominican Republic
Pros Easy to Roll
Cons Everything else
Price $1.00
tFS Rating 5.0/10

Juicy Blunts released a Pear flavored blunt in their latest flavor pack. We covered almost all the flavors in previous reviews and were generally impressed by them. Too bad Pear doesn’t fit in with its brothers. On the positive side, the wraps characteristics make this review extremely easy to do.

The wrap smell? Nothing like pear, completely synthetic. The wrap taste? None. Taste of the smoke? None. Smell of the smoke? Nothing like pear. That’s about as bad a job as you can do on a high-end, flavored wrap. Juicy is almost always pinpoint with their aromas, but need to seriously go back to the drawing board on this one.

To get a 5.0/10 rating there needs to be absolutely no resemblance to the flavor on the packaging. If you think about it, that’s pretty damn hard to do. The only positive I can say is that atleast the leaf didn’t taste bad, it just didn’t taste anything like a pear.

Hopefully, our next review has a much more positive tone.

Royal Blunts: Purple Haze

Royal Blunts: Purple Haze

One of the newest flavors out of the Royal Blunts camp is Purple Haze. It’s hard to find a quality grape-flavored wrap these days, so I was pretty stoked when we got these in.

theFreshScent Product Recap
Category Blunts
Company Royal Blunts
Made In USA
Pros Quality packaging
Cons Smells like Dimetapp
Price $1.50
tFS Rating 6.5/10

Royal Blunts uses a 60/40 split of paper & tobacco to create each wrap. This, plus their new Freshness Guaranteed packaging adds up to a consistently high-quality blunt. The inner packaging even contained a perfectly rolled leaf, around the filler tube, with no creases – that’s a lot easier said than done.

RB describes this wrap as a “grape and fruit blend that enhances any flavor.” Ooook, not sure what that means. Sounds like marketing hype to me. What the blunt actually smells like is Dimetapp, one of the most heinous substances known to man.

It’s an over-powering smell that gives off more of a synthetic grape than anything else. The blunt wrap burned great and had a sweet taste to it and luckily, no Dimetapp-esque flavor was lurking in the shadows.

Purple Haze isn’t the worst blunt wrap I’ve encountered, but it definitely isn’t the best. For a company that puts out so many winners, this one was a miss for me. What do you guys think?

Juicy Blunts: Mango Papaya

November 14th, 2006 by Alex

Mango-y and Papaya-y

It’s been too long since a product review has dropped, so let’s get’r done. Juicy Blunts is throwing a twist into things with their Mango Papaya blunt wrap.

Following the trend of their latest releases, the packaging is eye catching and each contains 1 leaf. The tapered edge makes rolling the blunt smooth and easy. Leaf smell is great, Juicy did a good job combining the smells. The mango slightly over powers the papaya, but you can tell both aromas are present. The wrap burned smooth even if there wasn’t any taste added to the smoke. Also, a slight mango aroma was given off by the blunt while it burned.

Overall, this is a very solid blunt that just needs a little more personality to take it to the top.

Royal Blunts: Passion Fruit

November 1st, 2006 by Alex

Royal Blunts: Passion Fruit

Royal Blunts delivers some of the best flavors on the market. Just like other major players, their line-up is heavily filled with fruit based flavors – Mango, Peach, Strawberry and more. Passion Fruit is in the same category, and delivers like RB knows how.

First point, the wrap wasn’t dry, which is the only real drawback from Royal. If you spot any package designs with the see-through square be warned there’s a high chance it’s gonna be brittle as hell.

The smell is good on this wrap, not pinpoint accurate, but close enough to work. This wrap hits the usual notes after that – good to smoke, doesn’t add much flavor but the burned smoke does leave a good aroma. Royal Blunts has put together a solid product but it’s nothing that sticks out from the crowd.

The Breakdown: Price: $1.50 tFS Rating: 6.5/10

Juicy Blunts: Peach Cognac

October 30th, 2006 by Alex

Juicy Blunts: Peach Cognac

Dipping into Juicy Blunt’s newest line of flavors, Peach Cognac is a wrap that promises the whole package. It’s always a pleasure to roll JB’s because the high leaf quality and tapered edge (for good adhesion) are a constant.

First thing you notice is the smell and how it’s pinpoint accurate. Juicy is starting to get damn good at recreating almost any aroma. I guess practice makes perfect.

This wrap doesn’t add any flavor to your smoke but does fill the air with a deep peach smell. It also smokes smooth and burns even. Overall, this blunt is solid and worth trying out.

Blunt Wrap: Blueberry Burst

September 14th, 2006 by Tim

Blunt Wrap: Blueberry Burst
Ok, enough politics for the day – on to the reviews. Blunt Wrap has released Blueberry Burst ($1.50), their take on the popular fruit filling.

As usual, Blunt Wrap delivers on leaf quality – serrated edges and perfect moistness. Right when opening the blunt you get an intense serving of blueberry. During the roll, you’ll notice it’s more of a confused blueberry scent. Blunt Wrap have mixed something in there that’s hard to identify. Unfortunately, the smoke added no smell or taste, but the leaf itself had a sugary coating on it.

Overall, I liked this wrap. Not too much on the flavor but a solid buy nonetheless.
