Marijuana Issue Reaches Tipping Point

There are some advocates out there that believe we’ve reached a “tipping point” with overturning the current cannabis laws. Despite the same rhetoric from government officials on the war on drugs, it does feel like there is a change in the air in regards to marijuana. After all, more and more television shows and feature movies are becoming more and more popular.

Keith Stroup, founder of NORML, the organization that fights for marijuana legalization, sees a tipping point. He refers to a 2002 Time/CNN poll:

There’s some data out there that shows 47 percent of Americans have smoked marijuana at some point in their life. [...] That was five years ago, and that means there are likely more living Americans today who have smoked than have not. That tells me that we are very close to a tipping point on this issue.

NORML even took the opportunity to unleash their pro-marijuana TV ad on all the news networks and some others. The ad seems to be targeting those in Washington that need some reassurance that this is what the people want and how it would overall benefit us.

The commercial says:

You can tax it, you can regulate it, apply age restrictions… create millions of new jobs… save our economy.

According to an article at the NORML Blog:

According to numerous survey and polls, approximately 75% of Americans support medical access to cannabis; 73% favor decriminalizing cannabis possession for adults and 42% of Americans support legalizing cannabis.

America, isn’t it time for a serious, unbiased look at this plant and drug, whether it’s used for medication or recreation?

Craig Ferguson’s Late Show on 4/20

The opening of Craig Ferguson’s Late Show on CBS, was particularly funny on 4/20.

Ferguson has been known to mess with the smokers on his show.

Large Load Seized on 4/20 of All Days

It’s 4/20. It’s morning, it’s hot, muggy — you’re down in Miami. You’re cruising along the Florida turnpike trying to get to a 4/20 event with important cargo. As you look at your rear view mirror, you see a piece of styrofoam from your truck fly out of the bed and hit another car. Just as you think, “I hope a cop didn’t see that,” the familiar red and blue lights flash. You pull over, nervously. The cop makes his walk towards the car and as soon as he nears the bed, out of the side view mirror you see his facial expression change as he smells the trees of marijuana you have.

Pop quiz hot shot: “Do you bail and run for your life? Or do you sit there, get arrested and face an easy decade in jail just because you were supposed to get to a 420 event with marijuana?” You bail.

Sound like a good 4/20 misadventure? It was. This actually happened.

Witnesses said it was an estimated $500,000 worth of marijuana was confiscated and placed in large black trash bags. Despite more law enforcement officers being called in, the driver of the truck escaped. Showing up to the 4/20 event without weed is a hell of a lot better than showing up to jail with drug charges.

[Santa Cruz, CA] Partied like Potstars in UC Santa Cruz

Everyone usually arrives early to walk around and truly enjoy the festivities before heading off to Porter Meadow to light up at 4:20 p.m. Mother Nature threw some heat Santa Cruz’s way on 4/20. At UC Santa Cruz, the brave people that did venture forth into the baking sun, carried water bottles and suntan lotion.

A newly added oddity to the party were religious, sign-wielding protesters. If anyone needed pot clearly it was those that were questioning the morality of smoking pot and holding signs that read ‘Highway to Hell’. Even bare chested dudes blowing smoke into their faces didn’t entice them to come to the dark side.

All in all, the 96ºF heat didn’t result in any medical incidents and the police got a chance to rescue a dog trapped in a car that had it’s windows up. 5-0 were also happy to give out 200 parking citations.

[Boulder, Denver] No Tickets Issued for Possession

Roughly between 8,000-10,000 people showed up at the University of Colorado for their 4/20 rally. At 4:20 p.m. they let out a cheer and a cloud of smoke filled the air.

Another 3,000 people showed up at the Civic Center Park in Denver, CO. People heard live music and speeches from activist groups. 80 police officers were present as well but no drug arrests were made.

[Vancouver, BC] 4/20 Draws Another Big Crowd

Vancouver’s huge 420 Bash at the Art Gallery had all kinds of people, from all different walks of life; they all had one thing in common — the love of cannabis. This video is from Thorny Bleeder Records and gives you a quick run down of the kinds of activities and people that made the event what it was.

It starts off with a questionable taste of music and an even more questionable dental plan. Then after some of the crowd is shown, some retro dressed clown trying to emulate the naked cowboy from Times Square says ‘I want to be high!’ You and everybody else buddy!

It’s a time when people can come together and vendors can capitalize on the cannabis craze by advertising their kush buds. It looked like a peaceful event, not a cop in sight. The Canucks really know how to throw a party.

Million Marijuana March ‘09 Starts Today

Infuriated by President Obama’s reaction to a pot legalization question at a recent Q&A conference, organizers of the Million Marijuana March are pulling out all the stops to make sure the issue is taken seriously by lawmakers.

This year’s goal is to get a bill signed into law by December 31, 2009, fully legalizing possession of up to 10 plants or 10 lbs. of processed plant material per person. Organizers of the march are also giving the “War on Marijuana” a much needed facelift by separating it in name from the broader “War on Drugs”, which includes hard drugs like heroin and meth.

On the heels of a bloody Mexican drug war and the near collapse of our own economy, this year’s march could make an even bigger impact than in years past. Organizers stress the importance of professionalism, order, and peaceful protest among attendees if their message is to be taken seriously. Everyone “except the DEA” is invited, including non-users who support the movement, medical medical marijuana patients, and recreational users.

252 cities around the globe have signed up for the event. The Million Marijuana March is set for 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2009 @ The National Mall in Washington D.C.

To answer your first question: No, you do not need to be a MMJ patient to attend this event. It’s open to everyone 18 and older, and there will be a designated “medication area” with pre-registration (for patients only).

For only $10.00, you can enjoy a day filled with live music, speakers, workshops, panels, vendors, food; and for patients, you can register to be a judge in the first annual JEMM CUP for a $35.00 registration fee. Must have bring a doctor’s recommendation for verification purposes.

I’ll be attending and would love to see all your beautiful faces there, so if you’ve got an hour or two free this Sunday, come out to Hollywood and join in the festivities!

G4TV Gone Wild on April 20th

If you can’t make it out to a 4/20 gathering this year, why not pack that trusty pipe of yours and tune in to G4 for a night of ganjavision and the best of the best stoner movies out there!

@ 7:00 pm, Attack of the Show will broadcast a 420 special -– Kevin Periera will be heading down under to do some research on Australia’s marijuana laws and kick it with the residents of Nimbin; a small village where the weed is plentiful and the vibes are irie. Chris Hardwick will be here in the US, doing some investigation on tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and Alison Haislip and comedian Doug Benson will be up at Oaksterdam University. AOTS will also be attending the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, celebrating and smoking the world’s best weed.

@ 8:00 pm, you can enjoy one of the most popular stoner movies, Half Baked.

@ 10:00 pm, is Doug Benson’s Super High Me -– akin to Morgan Spurlock’s Supersize Me. Benson shows what happens when you smoke marijuana everyday for a month (sounds like a pretty average month to me).

Over at G420, there will be news, videos, special features, Doug Benson popping in to visit here and there. So pop in a tray of brownies, spark up a bleezy and relax with some quality programming!

Colorado University Holds Largest 4/20 Event

While most of us will be rolling joints and crafting gravity bongs out of household objects with our friends to celebrate my favorite holiday (4/20), the Colorado University chapter of NORML will be holding the largest organized annual 4/20 event in the world… and this year is extra special.

With the growing awareness of the importance of cannabis legalization comes increased participation and support from marijuana activists all over the world. NORML is encouraging college chapters of NORML and SSDP to hold marijuana discussions and gatherings next week to encourage a fresh perspective on cannabis laws and the much-needed reformation.

Next weekend at the University of Colorado at Boulder will consist of panels and speakers, doctors, lawyers, students, activists and professors as well as supporters of cannabis prohibition engaging in discussions, and anyone and everyone is encouraged to attend.

If you’re lucky enough to reside in the area, I highly recommend you consider making a stop and listen to some of the speakers; your voice and support is vital to the marijuana movement!

UC Santa Cruz Potblocks Students

Parents of first-year students at UC Santa Cruz in California recently awoke to find the following message in their inbox:

I encourage you to talk with your student about his or her plans for 4/20. Ask direct questions about the choices they make and express your expectations regarding marijuana, alcohol or other drug use. Although students may not initiate discussion on this topic, your opinions and expectations can influence their behavior.

The email — sent by Felicia McGinty, vice-chancellor of student affairs at UCSC — also outlines plans for prohibiting overnight guests from April 18th through 20th, towing illegally parked vehicles, restricting bus service, and taking other incendiary measures to see that the annual event doesn’t “pose a threat to student safety.”

She went on to say:

While similar ‘4/20 celebrations’ occur simultaneously on college campuses across the United States, over the past four years the event here at UCSC has grown in numbers, with many of the participants being visitors with no investment in our UCSC community. The growth in scale of this activity has become a concern for both the University and surrounding community.

While school officials have a right to ban illegal activity on school property, meddling in parent-child relationships crosses the line. Not to mention that these measures are a poor use of time and resources and will cause unnecessary inconvenience for students, faculty members and visitors to the university.

Last year’s attempts at curtailing the event failed miserably despite blockades and a mass issuing of parking tickets. Only time will tell whether this last-ditch effort bears any fruit for the powers that be at UCSC.

Something tells me it’s going to be one hell of a 4/20 in Santa Cruz.

I know we’re a little late to the party on this one, but it’s still worth mentioning. Strictly Fitteds tipped everyone off to these seasonal specials from Estate LA.

To quote SF’s original post:

These will be available for purchase at 4:20 am on 4/20/07 on www.estatela.com and also at 4:20 pm at FITTED HAWAII (That’s 4:20 in their respective time zones folks). Only 52 pieces total were produced, so you know what to do.

Too bad we weren’t able to clue everyone in on this deal sooner, I’d love to see a pic of one of our readers with those on.

The timing is actually right on point with this drop, as both Sour Diesel and Kush have been making the heavy rounds these past few weeks.

Still I’m thinking both hats should be different shades of green, and maybe something like this come on the purple fitted.
