Eco-Friendly Marijuana Packaging

July 7th, 2009 by Erin

There’s nothing I love more than when two of my favorite things come together, like Base Design shows us with their concept joint packaging design by recycling disposable containers, painting them white, and adding the iconic black pot leaf sticker.

  • Altoids containers
  • film canisters
  • glass cases
  • R/X pill containers

Tom Greenwood of Base says:

There’s a whole ritual and tactile experience that goes with smoking, and we didn’t want to detract from that. [...] Nobody owns marijuana, man.

The intent of the design is to send a “green” message while understanding that everyone rolls differently; hence the various shapes and sizes of containers.

NORML-y Crooks

June 30th, 2009 by Alex

CrooksNORML.jpg

There are only so many original names, acronyms and phrases out there in the world. If you read this blog and see the letters ‘NORML’ next to one another, 99 times out of 100 we’re referring to The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Welcome to the 1 in 100 mention – a shirt collabo between LA-based Crooks & Castles and Canada-based NORML.

The drop takes color palette inspiration from the fixtures of the upper crust fashion world; Gucci and Versace for instance. The use Crooks’ iconic medusa head design and come in 3 different colorways. No word on if they’ll be available online, but there are available in-store at the NORML shop.

Cop ‘em while you can.

Nutiva Organic Chocolate Hemp Shake

June 12th, 2009 by Erin

It seems like Whole Foods is really wrapping their arms around the hemp revolution.

They now carry the Nutiva Organic Hemp Shake, and in contrast with Whole Foods sometimes steep prices, you can snag this delicious shake at $0.99. It contains organic hemp protein, superfood chocolate blend (organic FairTrade Certified chocolate, organic ramon nuts, organic guar gum, inulin from chicory root, organic mesquite pods), organic Fair Trade Certified evaporated cane juice, and organic chocolate flavor.

If you’re looking for a good dose of fiber to stay regular, you need to pick some of this up. Ellen over at IAteAPie.net recommends it. Mix 2-4 tablespoons of HempShake™ with milk (or ideally, soy milk, hemp milk, rice milk or almond milk), and throw in some banana (optional) and blend to make it rich and frothy. Each serving provides 12 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein.

If you don’t know me by now, I love anything organic and hemp is definitely a staple in my diet. I’ve been looking for a healthy morning beverage mix and since Carnation just isn’t cutting it, I think I know what my new go-to mix is.

Here’s a recipe courtesy of NutivaHempShake.com:

Chocolate Dream
2-4 Tbsp. Nutiva® Hempseed
2-4 Tbsp. Nutiva® HempShake™
8 oz. vanilla rice milk
1-2 Tbsp. Nutiva® Coconut Oil
1 ripe or frozen banana

Place seeds in a blender with 1 oz. of water, blend into a thick paste, and add remaining ingredients.

Done.

Bape Drops ‘Neon Camo Hemp’ Gear

May 29th, 2009 by Alex

bape-hemp.jpg

Depending on which side of the fashion spectrum you sit, Bape has launched a hemp-based pattern assault on the masses. Dubbed the ‘Neon Camo Hemp Accessories Collection’ (that’s a mouthful), the drop consists of a messenger bag, backpack and two different styles of tote bags.

Each piece sports the classic Bape gorilla-face camo in two-tone brown/beige with black trim. A small, but nice, touch to the messenger bag is a reflective stripe — theoretically to make someone who wears Bape gear easier to spot and tag with your SUV.

No specific release date yet, but keep checking Bape stores and web accounts until they show up.

Big Pharma Developing Ersatz Weed Treatment

May 29th, 2009 by Russ

Savitex

Large conglomerates and multinational corporations seem to be intent on sucking the fun out of just about everything. It seems that they’ve now set their sights on doing this to weed. English Pharma Behemoth, GW Pharmaceuticals, is now seeking approval of Sativex, a marijuana-based nasal spray.

GW Pharma has assured investors that they have meticulously extracted only the finest, most potent cannabanoids from “proprietary” strains of gourmet marijuana grown in the richest most fertile soil, lovingly drawn from the moist nether regions of mother Earth. The company is very quick to congratulate itself on creating a drug that provides all of the benefits of weed with few of the undesirable ’side effects.’ In other words, GW claims to have developed a medicinal form of weed that doesn’t get you high.

As with the pharmaceutical industry at large, this medicine wasn’t developed with any societal good in mind. This is merely an attempt to seize as much market share as possible from a medical marijuana gold rush that appears to be in full frenzy. As we have learned from an industry that spends two-thirds of its research budget on copycat drugs, Big Pharma isn’t out to help anyone other than its own investors.

Unfortunately for GW, a cold corporate mindset can’t accurately wrap itself around weed culture.  No self-respecting weed connoisseur will spend 10 to 20 times the price of natural herb for a product that is peddled as ‘refined.’ There is already a whole spectrum of refined greenery.

For instance, anyone with a passing familiarity with weed already knows that vaporization allows the ingestion of THC without inhaling particulate matter and allows for a much more mellow high. Sounds a lot more pleasant than shoving a dispenser up one’s nose.

Germany Bans Red Bull Cola

May 27th, 2009 by Rick

Red Bull Cola

The Health Institute in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, conducted a sample test of Red Bull Cola and discovered a minute amount of a byproduct of cocaine, per liter in the drink. Fearing violations of their narcotics law, five other German states (Hesse, Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate) banned the drink from being sold in stores.

On Monday, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Germany’s equivalent to the FDA, but more scientific), said that that level of cocaine within the drink was too low to pose any sort of health risk and planned to release a more detailed report sometime today.

Red Bull said it’s cola was…

harmless and marketable in both the U.S. and Europe.

It doesn’t make sense why the ban went into effect. It would take 12,000 liters of the drink to become affected. Even negative publicity is still publicity and with all the media outlets covering the story, Red Bull Cola (which has only been available for a year) may certainly benefit from the buzz.

R.J. Reynolds Develops Orbs, Tobacco Candy

May 26th, 2009 by Rick

A smokeless tobacco product, that dissolves from a tablet, called Orbs, is being test-marketed in Central Indiana by the makers R.J. Reynolds.

The new product’s tag line is:

the best tobacco you never smoked.

Some opponents of Orbs are against it saying that it has too much of an appearance of candy. Others worry that the cellphone sized box would attract more children to the product and multiple tablets would be taken at a time.

David Howard, a R.J. Reynolds spokesman said:

These products meets society’s expectations. There’s no second-hand smoke. There’s no spitting and there’s no litter. They are marketed specifically to adult consumers who make informed decisions about tobacco.

Ironically enough, R.J. Reynolds didn’t create this product to have people reduce their smoking habit, but to instead be able to use this product and garner the nicotine intake where smoking is prohibited.
