Organizer Rob Waddell says this year’s annual Hempfest (aptly named Hempfest: The End of an Era) in Ontario, Canada from August 27-30, is scheduled to be the last. A celebration centered around enjoying marijuana medicinally and recreation-ally, the four day event has had a lot of buzzkills to contend with over the years in the form of:

Unwarranted police presence.

Police vehicle checks that focus on “interrogation”.

Police hindering access.

Police not weeding out actual impaired drivers.

Waddell frustratingly notes:

It’s the harassment of people traveling to and from the festival. The constitution and Charter of Rights guarantee us the right to gather peacefully and demonstrate against unjust laws, which we’re doing. [...] The police keep interfering with our people and the right to gather.

Waddell even claims that the Ontario Provincial Police have U.S. law enforcement with them when Hempfest is happening:

They’re targeting the sick. We’re not a bunch of crazies out in the bush, getting stoned and running around, it’s (mostly) people that are 35-60 years old that are out there and (having) just a great weekend of educating each other and talking about friends and talking about the benefits and the situations that are arising about the medical use of cannabis in Canada. [...] While others may decide in future to pick up the Hempfest torch, this year’s event will be the last to be held in Poplar Dale, a community of less than 100 people who will be able to ‘get back to their peaceful way of life out there in the country.’

Oddly enough Waddell plans to turns Hempfest into a music festival where he hopes it will become “a real good rocking time for four days.”

Vivian McPeak speaks for Global Marijuana March 2009 in Seattle

Despite a little rain, the Global Marijuana March 2009 in Seattle gathered thousands of people all seeking the same thing — an end to the prohibition on pot. Seattle Hempfest’s, Vivian McPeak, said if there is anything not a threat to this society, it’s marijuana. Watch the video and learn why it might be a good idea the federal government leave the issue up to the states to decide.

Global Marijuana March 2009 in Cincinnati

The Global Marijuana March in Cincinnati was held at the Hamilton Courthouse on Sunday. Everyone from activists, students, vendors and dealers showed, all protesting the prohibition of pot and partaking in speeches and things like the coolest sign contest. With the smoking apparently being tolerated they lit a 4-foot joint that was smoked and pinched by many. “Ahhh! It’s Jointzilla! RUNNNN… TO IT!”

Vancouver Global Marijuana March 2009 Turnout Dismal

Two thousand were expected, 300 came. About noon, marijuana smoke filled the air as the protesters flocked on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery. They came, they talked about not supporting Bill C-15 and smoked. Should have went to Toronto’s Freedom Fest.

More Global Marijuana Marches 2009

There were more Global Marijuana Marches in the nation and worldwide like:

The event that exceeded expectations in Madison, Wisconsin.

Toronto’s Queen’s Park drew crowd estimates of 15,000 to 30,000.

Protesters in Hungary marched with a private security force, hired by the event organizers.

Hemp is what America was founded on.

And in these dire times for farmers and the rest of the American population suffering through economic hardship, it is about time we produce what we are arguably best at — behold, great American theater.

The Caitlin County Hemp Wars is a story about a three-generation family that grows industrial hemp in a desperate effort to save their farm. Think Oklahoma! meets Fiddler on the Roof in this “roots” driven musical about community and family that drives home a very important point. The tide is turning; the collective conscious of America is quickly coming to a consensus that old, ridiculous, harmful legal restrictions on non-psychoactive hemp is no small matter.

Playwrights Terry Crystal and Don DiVecchio probably didn’t have to look hard for inspiration, but the production is the result of five-years-in-the-making effort culminating in what may be the next great piece of Americana.

The Caitlin County Hemp Wars will premiere Tuesday, May 5th at 7:30pm @ the Zero Arrow Theatre in Harvard Square.

Everyone usually arrives early to walk around and truly enjoy the festivities before heading off to Porter Meadow to light up at 4:20 p.m. Mother Nature threw some heat Santa Cruz’s way on 4/20. At UC Santa Cruz, the brave people that did venture forth into the baking sun, carried water bottles and suntan lotion.

A newly added oddity to the party were religious, sign-wielding protesters. If anyone needed pot clearly it was those that were questioning the morality of smoking pot and holding signs that read ‘Highway to Hell’. Even bare chested dudes blowing smoke into their faces didn’t entice them to come to the dark side.

All in all, the 96ºF heat didn’t result in any medical incidents and the police got a chance to rescue a dog trapped in a car that had it’s windows up. 5-0 were also happy to give out 200 parking citations.

[Boulder, Denver] No Tickets Issued for Possession

Roughly between 8,000-10,000 people showed up at the University of Colorado for their 4/20 rally. At 4:20 p.m. they let out a cheer and a cloud of smoke filled the air.

Another 3,000 people showed up at the Civic Center Park in Denver, CO. People heard live music and speeches from activist groups. 80 police officers were present as well but no drug arrests were made.

[Vancouver, BC] 4/20 Draws Another Big Crowd

Vancouver’s huge 420 Bash at the Art Gallery had all kinds of people, from all different walks of life; they all had one thing in common — the love of cannabis. This video is from Thorny Bleeder Records and gives you a quick run down of the kinds of activities and people that made the event what it was.

It starts off with a questionable taste of music and an even more questionable dental plan. Then after some of the crowd is shown, some retro dressed clown trying to emulate the naked cowboy from Times Square says ‘I want to be high!’ You and everybody else buddy!

It’s a time when people can come together and vendors can capitalize on the cannabis craze by advertising their kush buds. It looked like a peaceful event, not a cop in sight. The Canucks really know how to throw a party.

Family Guy 420 Episode

If you missed the Family Guy 420th episode on April 19th, then visit Hulu and watch the latest episode with limited commercial interruption.

This year’s 4/20 has come and gone but here’s to the next 4/20, look for theFreshScent to have a significantly larger impact on the holiday.

Edit: Joy & her significant other tied the knot on 4/20. Congratulations to you both! :)

Infuriated by President Obama’s reaction to a pot legalization question at a recent Q&A conference, organizers of the Million Marijuana March are pulling out all the stops to make sure the issue is taken seriously by lawmakers.

This year’s goal is to get a bill signed into law by December 31, 2009, fully legalizing possession of up to 10 plants or 10 lbs. of processed plant material per person. Organizers of the march are also giving the “War on Marijuana” a much needed facelift by separating it in name from the broader “War on Drugs”, which includes hard drugs like heroin and meth.

On the heels of a bloody Mexican drug war and the near collapse of our own economy, this year’s march could make an even bigger impact than in years past. Organizers stress the importance of professionalism, order, and peaceful protest among attendees if their message is to be taken seriously. Everyone “except the DEA” is invited, including non-users who support the movement, medical medical marijuana patients, and recreational users.

252 cities around the globe have signed up for the event. The Million Marijuana March is set for 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2009 @ The National Mall in Washington D.C.

Playboy is no stranger to marijuana laws.

On June 4th, 2009, the Marijuana Policy Project will host their 4th Annual Party at the famed Playboy Mansion.

While the video may not provide you with much new information on “why” marijuana should be decriminalized, executive director Rob Kampia does offer an interesting figure: the estimated costs of marijuana prohibition are ~$14 billion annually.

Perry Ferrell, Christopher “Kid” Reid and Jackie “Jokeman” Martling also render their pleas to the cause. They also have Margaret Cho, Gary Coleman, Montel Williams, Melissa Ethridge, and many others.

Since their founding in 1995, MPP has made progress reforming U.S. marijuana laws. Accomplishing this by lobbying for legislation and running ballot initiative campaigns to allow ill patients to use medical marijuana, as well as sponsoring ballot initiatives to replace marijuana prohibition with a sensible regulatory system.
