Marijuana Laws ‘Looney Tunes’ Says LAPD Chief

April 3rd, 2009 by Rick

Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton

Apparently, Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton, wants stricter regulations imposed on medical marijuana dispensaries in California. He’s also not a happy camper when it comes to the Obama Administration and their change in policy of only going after those dispensaries that violate state law.

The chief told a press conference Wednesday:

I think that the policy of the federal government at this time is unfortunate. I think the policy of this state is ‘Looney Tunes.’

What is ‘Looney Tunes’ is the fact that the Chief’s main concern is the medical marijuana clinics. The Chief’s concern should be regarding the numerous criminal elements in the city that use violence to move drugs — drugs like heroin, crack and meth. It’s as if Elmer Fud, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are arguing over if it’s rabbit or duck season — obviously the Chief clearly doesn’t know either.

Bratton said:

They pass a law, then they have no regulations as to how to enforce the darn thing and, as a result, we have hundreds of these locations selling drugs to every Tom, Dick and Harry.

If Tom, Dick, and Harry have medical marijuana ID cards and are medical marijuana patients, then they have a right to be there. Is the Chief implying that people off the street are able to obtain marijuana at the dispensaries? They have enough patients coming to them legally, there’s no need to break the law. If the Chief feels that there are dispensaries distributing marijuana illegally then he needs to conduct a proper investigation.

Bratton said:

While I fully support its use for medicinal purposes, why don’t we regulate it like we do Lipitor or Viagra. You can’t buy those two without getting it through a legitimate pharmacy. If this drug is so important and so helpful, why is it not regulated like every other drug?

Marijuana is not created in a lab. Marijuana does not have side effects that require other medication to be taken. Marijuana is not a pill. Marijuana shouldn’t even be in the same building as a pharmacy.

The medical marijuana dispensaries are an ideal location to distribute marijuana. The staff that run them are knowledgeable and patients can discuss their ailments because they are all taking the same medication. If the pharmaceutical industry becomes involved with the distribution of this plant, prices will sky rocket and marijuana will disappear right back into the underground black market. Smart?

I disagree. I think he raises legitimate concerns – you can’t just buy Xanax or Percocet on the street, so why should you be able to buy marijuana? If we want people to start taking legalization seriously, we have to start taking it seriously ourselves. For example, the phrase “marijuana is a plant” is completely irrelevant. It’s a drug. Opium is a plant too. Would you seriously rally for its legalization on those grounds?

Percocets and Xanax are regulated and obtained with a prescription in a pharmacy yet despite that they are still sold in the street for far more $ than what it took to pay for them. Just because something comes from a regulated source doesn’t mean it won’t be on the underground black market. By your logic tobacco and alcohol are drugs too. Maybe coffee? Sex can be a drug, it releases the same endorphins and dopamine as drugs do. Should sex be regulated? That’s on the black market too in form of prostitution. Leave the Pharmaceutical companies out of the equation, if they get their hands into it then it will just continue being a black market commodity and we won’t get anywhere.

You are being incredibly hypocritical. You say you want marijuana to be available for medicinal use; yet, you don’t want the pharmacy companies, the makers of medicine, to get involved. This is America, my friend. People are going to jump on marijuana like white on rice, brand it, market it, and shove it down our collective throats. Those people will inevitably turn out like “the pharmacies” or “big tobacco,” unless both of these industries take marijuana under their wings (which they undoubtedly will).

Also, using false analogies is no way to debate. Besides their irrelevance to the discussion, I’m perfectly aware that alcohol and tobacco are drugs. Are you suggesting that people buy tobacco on the black market like they do for marijuana or sex?

No, just saying that since you said marijuana is a drug, let’s just put all the cards out on the table and call things what they truly are. I bet arguing with people online is a drug for you. Those are not false analogies, it worked fine with your dialogue, just not you personally. It’s funny you seem bitter about the industries that regulate certain things yet there you are giving up, bending over and saying more please by letting the corporations run rampant! As far as this being “America” this country has been bought and sold a long time ago, the sooner people realize that the quicker they can pull their heads out of the sand and take this country back.

I have to say… from experience, there is a mixed bag of dispensaries out there — some where business is being done 100% legit and the buyer has a safe and secure feeling about the purchase from beginning to end, while there are other clinics that just abuse their golden ticket by operating in suspicious ways — IE: allowing losers to sit in their “office” to “test” the goods… sit around and blasting music and otherwise running their business in a less-than-professional manner.
Bratton is a schmuck, and his old-school technique actually means well — but he still figures out a way to come off sounding out of touch.
Keep the herb away from Xanax and other such disasters. It’s far and away a better method than anything currently offered at big pharma outlets, and thus already has a fine home.

Its nice to know that there are other professionals out there that actually know their facts and have all their bases covered.

    Thanks Rick,

Thanks J… I appreciate that. It’s what I’m here for. I don’t presume to know more than the next man, but I’m always in a quest for more knowledge and most of the time I find it. Mankind’s greatest fears manifest due to our lack of knowledge.
