Bundles of Drugs Made into Art
February 27th, 2009 by PerryFor Tom Fruin, the line between art imitating life and life imitating art just became a little less sharp.
His new dimebag art project entitled “American Landscape,” is literally a collection of (now empty) bags of weed, coke and heroin Fruin’s collected over the years and laid into murals of different parts of counter-culture Americana.
More examples of his art work can be found on his website.

And All the Dispensary Owners Exhaled
February 27th, 2009 by PerryFor those waiting to see when Obama was to stay true to his word about ending medical marijuana raids — the time is now.
And to Obama’s credit, it’s only a couple months into his first term, not a couple years into his second one. Good for him, good for us and even better for dispensary owners who are being locked up for legally providing medicine to people.
US Attorney General Eric Holder hinted this would be new policy, but officially announced it at a press conference yesterday.
Study: Alcohol May Increase Cancer Risks
February 27th, 2009 by Perry
Refuting a commonly held belief that a moderate wine consumption has shown a link to good health and a reduction in heart disease, a new study revealed alcohol may increase cancer risks.
The Washington Post documented a study of more than a million British women, the largest study of its kind, showing that as little as one alcoholic drink per day could potentially increase the risk of cancer.
Naomi E. Allen of the University of Oxford said:
That’s the take-home message. If you are regularly drinking even one drink per day, that’s increasing your risk for cancer. [...] There doesn’t seem to be a threshold at which alcohol consumption is safe.
The Journal of the National Institute of Cancer is publishing the study that flies in the face of U.S. dietary guidelines which talk about the beneficial effects of a drink per day.
New Jersey Governor Gives Thumbs Up to Pot Bill
February 27th, 2009 by PerryNew Jersey Governor Jon Corzine said he would “absolutely” sign the medical marijuana bill proposed by the New Jersey legislature.
Corzine is a Democrat running for re-election next fall, and said laws should be made so that patients are comfortable and there are safeguards against abuses.
The Senate approved the bill Monday. It faces an uncertain fate in the Assembly. New Jersey would be the 14th state to approve MMJ.
Huge Coke Ring Busted in Maryland
February 26th, 2009 by Perry
Trenell Murphy, 33, was recently charged with possession — of 41 kilograms of cocaine.
The seizure, at an estimated value of $3 million of cocaine, is the largest ever by Baltimore Police Department without the help of federal officials. The Associated Press reports more than 150 kilos were found by federal officials near the port.
Murphy was under surveillance at the time the cocaine was discovered, and was busted after a warrant yielded enough coke to accommodate a Robert Downey Jr.-sized binge. The suspect has two prior arrests for cocaine and is expected to be held without bail.
Glenn Beck Interviews MPP Director
February 26th, 2009 by PerryI don’t know how much better an argument you can have for legalization as long as you put Glenn Beck on the other side of it.
Rob Kampia spends about five minutes clearly explaining why California’s proposal to legalize marijuana makes sense — and Beck then equates every cogent thought to California’s only doing this because it’s broke.
First of all, if California is only considering legalization because it’s desperately broke — who cares? It’s still the logical thing to do and would generate billions of dollars in tax revenue.
Secondly, why does Glenn Beck admit to smoking marijuana? I think it actually makes pot smokers a less sympathetic group because he’s such a toolbox.
Canada Calls the United States Out
February 26th, 2009 by Perry
A recent rash of violence in the country has citizens cautioning lawmakers not to overreact — and end up like the United States.
The editorial points out some startling statistics: The U.S. has the highest per capita prison population in the world, imprisoning more than the Soviet gulags and more than the apartheid.
The concern is over new laws in Canada which compels judges to use mandatory minimums in sentencing. The move ultimately leads to more people in prison, which hasn’t shown any likelihood of eliminating the cycle of addiction.
