Fine Lines: Legalization Vs. Decriminalization

December 24th, 2008 by Perry

President-elect Barack Obama has repeated several times he is not for legalization, he is for de-criminalization.

Obama continually refers to “changing paradigms” with how we police drugs, referring to the drug war as “an utter failure.” Unfortunately, how much of it is partisan rhetoric, how much he wants to change, and how much he can change are all still in the speculation stages.

What is known is that the economy is by and large an overwhelming concern. And if you look at the popular support afforded presidents who have turned around the economy, they usually enjoy political dominance in a second term – which is when many predict, if ever, we’ll see legitimate action on drug policy legislation by Obama and his administration.

    That a boyObama keep up your strong will and don’t fold against those who oppose you. This stupid drug war is a failure and complete waste of resources from our federal government there are far better matters our country needs to attend to first!

    I seriously doubt that any polotician will ever decriminalizine marijuana, it would make a mockery of everything the usa govenrment has worked to achive, theres so much money to be made out of the criminalization of marijuana, and too many peoples lives depend upon it remaining illegal, and at what cost? the entire downfall of human kind society because of the selfish greed of a select number of politicians, who are meant to be working for the people. The authority in which man has granted himself does not stand above the authority that nature reserves, if only we could see and respect this fact. A complete waste of the marijuana plant that the human race would surly benefit from.

    i had a thought the other day while i was hanging with my friend mary ;)
    could any1 challenge the law that makes weed illegal by saying that its unconstitutional??
    i mean pursuit of happiness, no actual basis for it being illegal other than the fact that it already is…
    tFS i would appreciate the thoughts :)

    @Georgel
    so true. and you know what? i can even accept the fact that almost every government maneuvered itself into a position where legalization is no longer possible due to “rep” reasons. who would take them serious if they issue a law against a substance that is REALLY dangerous? what makes me angry is that most people think we have these irrational laws to save us from something evil. if everybody would just see it as clear as you do there, and governments would only acknowledge the fact that they banned it for monetary reasons, and due to a lack of knowledge…i could live with that. but what drives me up the wall, is the lack of education and the blindness about the whole situation in the general public. i am not a danger to society because i like to get stoned.
