Team Obama Says “No” to Legalizing Marijuana

A few people have written to us for an opinion on the recently updated ‘Open for Questions‘ feature on the President-elect’s official Change.gov website.

It’s a pretty simple format. People submit questions that they would like answered by Obama’s transition team, then those questions are voted up or down depending on their popularity / relevance. The 5 most voted on questions then get answered.

Out of the 5, here is the question that most of us are interested in:

Will you consider legalizing marijuana so that the government can regulate it, tax it, put age limits on it, and create millions of new jobs and create a billion dollar industry right here in the U.S.? – S. Man, Denton

And here is the transition team’s expansive response:

President-elect Obama is not in favor of the legalization of marijuana.

It might not be the answer we wanted, but at least their reasoning is clear. And by clear, I mean non-existent.

Before everyone gets worked up about this, let’s think about the venue more than the response. Is a Change.gov blog post really going to be the launching point for an incoming administration’s marijuana policy? I don’t believe so.

Instead, this feels more like a boilerplate response than a final answer. Out of all 5 questions, the marijuana response was the shortest answer (only 1 sentence) and there was no attempt made to delve into any of the root issues.

In other words, this isn’t what marijuana progressives wanted to see, but it’s not an end-all / be-all either. I’m sure the MPP, NORML and LEAP will all continue to push just as hard for marijuana reform. I also bet they’ll hold the incoming administration accountable for a logical and thorough response to the legalization movement as a whole.

Now I want to take my vote back. Come on prez, think about it. Legalizing weed would be so progressive. You would make history and the world would be a better place..

I know I will personally hold him accountable!!! By there short answer it seems like the stigma against Marijuana, unjustly and falsely deserved though it may be, is still a political hot potato. Even if Obama plans to change our federal marijuana laws he would be to scared of the consequences of saying so before he officially moves into the white house and takes office. I have a digestive disease called gastroparesis (paralyzed stomach) which results in chronic nausea and vomiting. Since Marijuana is the safest, most efficient drug for the relief of nausea it is my drug of choice for the safe control of my chronic nausea and vomiting even though it is illegal in my state. Legally my Dr gave me a prescription for Regalen/Metoclopramide and told me, “Do not take it on a regular basis for it causes Irreversible Parkinson like shakes and tremors,” and this is Legal?!?! Come on you politico’s have the guts to face up to the truth or go home and let someone qualified do the job.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention. I’ve been on Marinol for years, at best it is only a placebo so maybe your mind will heal you. For it takes over an hour to work then doesn’t work. Plus it is even more expensive than Black Market Medical Marijuana and since I am a disabled person the state pays for it. No wonder we are going broke!!!

Jeff, I totally agree with you. I shattered my tailbone in highschool basketball. Later in life I broke my leg in a charity basketball game. The doctors didn’t fix the leg right causing more breaks. I now have severe back pain and walk with a limp, not to menation pain in my leg. I formed an addiction to lortabs to help with pain. Lortabs helped manage the pain better than Cannabis, but I get so aggitated, hurting not only myself but my loved ones. with Cannabis, it brings the pain down to a tolerable range. it alows me to work, and have a family, something Lortabs never did. I don’t even get MMJ where I live, I still do it illegal. And I will continue if it continues giving me the pain relief I need!
America has some real problems, legalizing weed won’t fix them, but at least it will be a huge start. I figured sometime before President-elect Obama was sworn in he would say something like this. A ressecion will not be what turns marijuana laws, nothing but a deppression will force America to change them. I truely believe that the end to cannabis prohibition is 4 to 8 years away. Though I prepaired and wouldn’t be suprised to see it last longer.
