Harshest Punishment of the Year Award

December 8th, 2006 by Alex

This story that pretty much defines the term disproportionate punishment.

Carmen Granata, a 23 year old Michigan native, likes to party. In Eastpointe, where she owns a house, Carmen decided to have a BBQ and invite friends over. I’ve had plenty of BBQ’s before, and as most people know, some are relaxed and some can get a little rowdy every once in a while. Carmen’s was definitely the 2nd of the two options.

Neighbors called police on her two times between 12AM and 1AM. At close to 4AM, one of Carmen’s friends went outside her porch to talk on a cellphone. The police were called a 3rd time and Carmen was given a ticket for violating the city’s noise ordinance.

This is where it turns weird - thinking that she’d just get a simple fine, Carmen plead Guilty to the noise violation. Biiiig mistake. Judge Norene Redmond gave her 30 days in jail for the infraction. It turns out neighbors had signed a petition saying her house was the site of frequent parties and this heavily swayed the judge.

Surprisingly, her punishment didn’t stop there. Carmen was sentenced to 2 years of drug testing on random date’s each month. Then, she was handed another 2 years worth of probation with daily breath tests for alcohol.

I’ve never heard of or read about such a horribly out-of-place punishment for what is a relatively minor infraction. I can understand the neighbors frustration, but putting a 23 year old girl behind bars for 30 days? That’s just cold.

Carmen’s family has hired a lawyer to get the Guilty plea thrown out of court, an hopefully repeal the sentence handed to her. For her sake, let’s hope it works.

Mercy…Your telling me she bothered people that much that she deserves 30 days in Jail? and 4 years of random drug testing? Yeaaa..so now tax money has to go to a 23 year old girl who likes to party for the next 4 years and 30 days.

no she has two year probation and radom drug testing .They let her off the hook for the daily drug and alchol testing. Dont be mad at the neighbors for her wrong doings. the cops were at her residence over 14 times within a 6 months period. We as tax payers do not have to put up with her crap either! It sure is peaceful now though!!!! Thank god for that now we all can get some needed sleep!!

Well if the cops came 14 times within a 6 month period, thats on avg 2-3times a month. I dont see how the cops didnt take any serious action against her within the third visit alone. And believe me you as tax payers are paying for her 30 day jail time and your saying 2 years probation and random “drug” testing like its nothing..you do KNOW what kinda of site your in right?

For one let me re phrase that they had over a dozen of times recieved complaints that is in the police report. They come out once and warn them if they come out a second time in one incident then she would have gotten a citation. on these terms she was warned several times .on that day she finaly recieved a ticket . they came out three times which I guess they should have gave her a ticket the second time but gave them an extra chance. Thats why when she went in front of the judge the judge did what she did. To bring peace back to the neighborhood and to calm things down for the residents who have to live next to the party girl. I think the judge did the right thing as tax payers we should be able to sleep at night and have a safe neighborhood .
I could see now if it only happen once in awhile but in this case it was every weekend and sometimes during the week. Enough was enough she had to learn to be respectful and if any one should be upset it should be with her for takeing tax dollars for being such a nusiance to the community in which she lives in!!! not at the neighbors who were trying to keep there neighborhood a nice quiet ,Safe and friendly one!!!
