Chronics

Looks like even major television networks are making good with the green leaf. Showtime has ordered another season if its hit TV show Weeds. Exactly 15 more episodes will be produced for season three of the show, to air over the summer.

Congratulations Weeds. Keep up the good work.

It’s been a busy week in the world of Counter-Culture. Time to sit back and check out what’s going on around us. This edition of debris serves up the usual variety of stuff.

On a side note, expect some cool new content & features next week. We won’t stop evolving the site until the internet runs out of bandwidth, promise.

The Video

Crazy Midget Fight: Anything that makes me laugh so hard and be equally disgusted with myself at the same time, has to be posted. This is the Jerry Springer Show at it’s ultimate peak.

US Customs Bust 60 Year Old Lady

November 16th, 2006 by Alex

Looks can be deceiving.
Looks like Granny’s up to no good. A 60-year-old woman and her son were busted about as hardcore as it gets by the US Customs & Border Patrol.

On Tuesday, damn early in the morning, Carmen Franco and her son Ramon Franco entered the Columbus, New Mexico entry port. Officers decided to give her car some face-to-face time and discovered a hidden compartment in the bumper. Ouch. Stuffed in the bumper was 198 pounds of weed. That’s a cool $200k in South-of-the-border cheeba. Someone back in Mexico is going to be really pissed off about that. They even found a small bonus bag filled with 83 grams of cocaine.

Customs agents showed up after the bust to arrest Carmen and her son. They were charged with, “importation of a controlled substance and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.”

Another day, another failed attempt at getting drugs into the US.

Drugs, Russia and the Internet

November 16th, 2006 by Alex

Looks good to me.

This is a quick one, but Russian Spy is reporting the internet is increasingly being used as a tool by criminal groups in Russia to push drugs. The number reported by the Director of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service is around 700 websites.

You can only get away with something like that in Russia. Considering AllofMP3.com is still operating with impunity, I doubt it will be easy to make progress against these websites. Still, it’s the job of the Russian authorities to try and battle the never-ending stream. Hopefully, there will be updates on this story as ringleaders are found and ousted.

The Negron Story - A Response

November 16th, 2006 by Alex

A battle of wits?

I’m sure that everyone remembers the Dorothy & Michael Negron ‘Children in Drug Den Test Positive for Cocaine‘ story.

As with almost everything drug related, I already made my feelings known about this story shortly after it was reported. Well, it looks like my social commentary was inflammatory enough that I received an email from Thomas Scott Negron - the nephew of Michael & Dorothy Negron.

Thomas makes some very valid and interesting points. He also throws in more than enough personal attacks to try and solidify the notion he’s a crazy redneck from Florida. So, I’m going to respond to all of his points in the public domain. I won’t be responding to his insults because those are coming from a cloud of anger at being associated with people who allow these sorts of things to happen to children. Well, that and every single media outlet in the nation (not surprisingly) condemning what his relatives did.

Email quoting goodness after the jump.

San Fran Decriminalizes It

November 15th, 2006 by Tim

Hellooo San Franciscoooo

De-prioritization makes its way to San Francisco as the Board of Supervisors pass more lenient guidelines to restructure marijuana policy. This would probably be bigger news if drug usage wasn’t such a serious part of San Fran culture already, taking into account that people there smoke crack so casually. Nevertheless, these are positive signs towards imminent legalization and I think that’s progressive.

Slow down buddy, it’s not all roses and fairytales. There are still laws that remain in place to punish obvious criminal acts: driving under the influence, possession or use by minors, and if marijuana is the source of a public safety threat. Public safety threat? On pot? Well, anything is possible I suppose.

This change in policy has some critics believing the law has become too tolerant and almost allows a free-for-all. Kim Stryker, Fair Oaks Community Coalition said:

There’s no reason to get a permit for a medical facility, there’s no reason to get a medical card - you just go to your neighbor and buy what you want in unlimited amounts according to this legislation.

Reminiscent of the newly approved laws in Santa Cruz, there is always going to be some backlash while people adjust. Still, this is damn good news.

10 Successful Marijuana Smokers

November 15th, 2006 by Alex

It's not a tumor!!

Brendan Gall, a new blogger to the scene, has posted an interesting article regarding successful people and marijuana use. It’s a well known fact that the stigma created to turn people away from weed is that it makes you lazy, un-motivated and generally ruins people lives. Basically, if you smoke you’re going to be the loser, older brother who’s still living in your parents garage at age 32.

That’s a cop out. Underneath, if you’re a motivated person, you can easily be successful and enjoy the greenleaf. If you’re a lazy person who wants to sit on the couch all day, then weed will be a conduit for that. To put it simply, life is what you make of it. In the end, we have ourselves to look towards for responsibility. And while it’s not hard to find examples of procrastinating stoners, there’s also many examples of intelligent & successful smokers.

Let’s check out Brendan’s list:

1) Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson
Owner of the Virgin Group
Estimated Worth: $5 Billion

2) Newt Gingrich
Politician
Speaker of the House 1995-1999

3) Ross Rebagliati
Olympic Gold Medalist Snowboarder 1998

4) David Hockney
Famous Painter

5) Richard Feynman
Physicist

6) Michael Bloomberg
Mayor of New York City

7) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Top 50 Greatest Basketball Player

8) Queen Victoria
Ruled Great Britian from 1837-1901

9) Aaron Sorkin
Television writer
Creator of “West Wing”

10) Robert Smith
Former Minesota Vikings Running back

Very cool. So, check out Brendan’s site to see the rest of his post or head on over to Very Important Smokers for even more info on famous & successful weed smokers.

JP33 & Bong Vodka

Bong Vodka

Jeremy Prasatik (JP33) creates a lot of colorful, eye-catching designs over a wide range of mediums - print, web, apparel and more. He just dropped a sneak peak at the new work he’s been commissioned on by Spirit of the Brand and Bong Vodka.

Take a look at the bottle design and it’s pretty clear where the name comes from.
