The Negron Story - A Response
November 16th, 2006 by Alex
I’m sure that everyone remembers the Dorothy & Michael Negron ‘Children in Drug Den Test Positive for Cocaine‘ story.
As with almost everything drug related, I already made my feelings known about this story shortly after it was reported. Well, it looks like my social commentary was inflammatory enough that I received an email from Thomas Scott Negron - the nephew of Michael & Dorothy Negron.
Thomas makes some very valid and interesting points. He also throws in more than enough personal attacks to try and solidify the notion he’s a crazy redneck from Florida. So, I’m going to respond to all of his points in the public domain. I won’t be responding to his insults because those are coming from a cloud of anger at being associated with people who allow these sorts of things to happen to children. Well, that and every single media outlet in the nation (not surprisingly) condemning what his relatives did.
Email quoting goodness after the jump.
To “Alex”
I would like to make a short and too the point comment on your (so-called) article entitled “Filthy couple force kids to live in drug den”.
You have judged others based on what amounts to a snap shot of OTHER MEDIA coverage of this incident. As a result of your willingness to suck on the misinformation nipple of main stream media for your dosages of news, you know only as little as any other isolated media moron. This cocoon mindset-laziness causes you to sit around waiting for information you can pass on giving the impression that you are some kind of reporter when in fact this is not the case.
The truth is, you know absolutely nothing about these people and their situation other than what the media and authorities want you to know or think, and you therefore with your nose up their asses, follow the lynch mob mindset.
I have to say the “willingness to suck on the misinformation nipple” is my favorite line from Thomas’ entire email. But I’m puzzled as to what exactly I’m misinformed on. If people wanted to know the entire sad life story that led to a couple raising chilren & grandchildren in drug-filled conditions, they would buy a book about it.
The reason Thomas’ relatives are in the news is because they have done something despicable enough to gain national attention. Not anyone else. While Thomas’ seems extremely angry at me for having an opinion on the matter, he doesn’t seem as angry at his own relatives for their actions or what they’re putting his family through.
Its amazing to me, how people like you can toss so many of the thoughtless comments and nasty remarks callously tossed not only their way, but the rest of our family, and then sit all teary eyed and watch some “reality” show about addiction and cry to show your (gag) empathy. (than dry up to catch “Star Search”!)
While I have a hell of a lot more information issue than you, I am not prepared to defend them, nor would I be willing to crucify them either. Obviously my Uncle Mike and Aunt Dorothy (Cissy) have problems, serious ones, and have had an obvious problem with drugs and lapse in judgement regarding their children and grandchildren, however they are real people. They love their children.
Lapse in judgement? A lapse in judgement is when you say something vindictive and later regret your actions. It sure as hell isn’t having loaded guns and needles on the floor. I think “huge fucking mistake” would be a better way to describe the Negron’s actions regarding their children. Not a lapse in judgement.
Still, Thomas makes an extremely valid point that Michael and Dorothy are still people. The media, including this blog, can be quick to throw out sensationalistic comments. There just isn’t enough time to get to know the backstory of every single news article in the world. Nobody plans on becoming an addict. Nobody dreams of someday horribly mis-treating their kids. But it happens. We are all mortal and all make mistakes, but you have to be responsible for them. It’s simple as that.
